I am not a big fan of eating or drinking, and it just doesn't seem to kindle that fire in me. If there is anything I look for in a restaurant/bar/cafe/pub, its the ambience and crowd rather than the food and drinks!! But here goes - a review of Cafe Coffee Day!
I went to Cafe Crappy (Coffee) Day whilst on holiday in India recently and my experience there has prompted me to write this review.
I inadvertantly got delayed during a shopping trip with my Mum (as girlies do!!) and didnt want to leave dinner too late. So we just swooped into the first restaurant we saw. I must say it looked really nice from the outside - not quite French cafe, but the decor was simple, clean lines and most importantly it looked like it was air conditioned. A welcome relief from the Indian heat!!
I normally drink a double expresso in Costa or Starbucks here in UK, but as I didnt want to stay awake trying to count sheep that night, so decided to go for an iced tea. Mum went for a cold coffee of sorts (can't remember for the life of me what flavour). We also ordered some sarnies to go with the drinks.
When the drinks arrived, Mum's coffee was fine but my iced tea could have been best described as luke warm tea with ice cubes floating at the top. So the top bit was cool and the rest of the glass was warm - I am not kidding!! When I pointed this out to the young and friendly chap at the till, he was extremely apologetic and offered to change my drink. An offer I took up promptly!
Another thing that struck me was the number of college kids hanging around both inside as well as outside the Cafe. Very off-putting for families I reckon.
When the sarnies arrived I found that although the taste was quite good, the bread was a bit dry and the edges were starting to curl. Not the sort of thing you would tolerate in a restaurant. But by this time we had given up. We just ate whatever they bought us, finished our drinks and quickly made our way home.
After that experience, you won't see me entering any one of these so-called trendy cafes mushrooming in every street corner of India. Give me a coffee shop in a 5 star hotel any day - I don't mind paying the price for luxury!!
