A NEW ADDITION TO THE LIST
As the big movies like ''Basic Instinct 2'', ''Underworld Evolution'' and ''Scary Movie 4'' were the movies which were widely discussed about, there was one movie which didn't get the attention it deserved. The movie is Blood Rayne, inspired from one of the few vampire video games in the PC platform. The game was a good experience, even with a few camera and control problems.
The movie itself has got some major problems, and first one is that it is based on a video game, and the game based movies are always supposed to be crap. We already had the movies like ''Resident Evil'', ''House of the Dead'' and ''Doom'', but the road doesn't end with these movies as we still have the movies, ''Far Cry'', ''Postal'' and ''Dungeon Siege'' yet to come.
But unlike the other movies mentioned above, Blood Rayne was certainly a choice which had more potential as a movie, it had vampires, it had a gorgeous vampire vixen and also the maximum blood and gore. But the one game which can do the best as a movie, will certainly be the Prince Of Persia. The triology has got a nice story and superb action scenes, and it will certainly do good as a movie.
Blood Rayne is directed by Uwe Boll, a German director who had also provided us with another video game adaptation, ''Alone in the Dark'', another horror movie which had Christian Slater and Tara Reid. Now he is back with a vampire movie, and this time its Kristinna Loken who plays the lead role. The bad girl of ''Terminator 3'' plays a half-vampire who is in her search for destiny with a thirst for revenge.
TIME TO RAIN BLOOD
The story takes you back to a dark gothic environment, and the darkness is spread throughout the movie. But the world looks too beautiful, with landscapes, waterfalls, and all the exotic beauty of mother nature. The dungeons and the mediveal towns looks real and believable.
In the movie, we are back in Romania, in the eighteenth century. The fact that there are lots of beliefs on vampires, concentrated in Romania and the surrounding areas, may have helped Boll in his cause. There are also a few of them, mentioned in Romanian folklore. But their beliefs were a bit different from the common knowledge about the vampires.
Blood Rayne (Kristinna Loken) is Dhampir (half-human, an off-spring of a vampire and a human) who wants to take revenge on her vampire father, Kagan (Ben Kingsley) for the death of her mother (The ancient beliefs say that Dhampirs are extremely good at fighting vampires). But it won't be too easy, as Kagan is now the strongest of all vampires.
Rayne inherits the usual weaknesses of vampires, including the fear for water and sunlight. The thirst for blood is also in her genes, but she has got unusual strength as well as the healing ability of the vampires. But she never seemed to be affected by any holy symbols.
In her mission, Rayne is joined by two vampire hunters, Vladimir (Michael Madsen) and Sebastian (Matt Davis). There is also Michelle Rodriguez, hope you might have seen her in Resident Evil. To defeat her father Rayne has to find three Talisman organs, an eye, a heart and a rib which will provide her with immense power. But it won't be too easy, even for some one like Rayne, and to add to her trouble Kagan is also on the hunt.
A LOST CHANCE
Kristinna Loken's performance in ''Terminator 3'' was something which I loved to watch, and she looks great in the movie, and she is provided with a similiar outfit which the central character wears in the video game. She suits quite well not only into the outfit, but also into her role as Blood Rayne, and she certainly makes a fine vampire.
As long was the female vampires are concerned, the only better looking vampire might be Kate beckinsale of ''Underworld'', but Kristinna has done a fine job in the sword fights, which was absent in the rather modern story of Underworld. But there a few examples which can show you how dumb, the combats can be! Even if Ben Kingsley was fine, all the other cast looked too bad.
This movie is not at all exploited in the appropriate manner, and there was certainly lots more scope for this movie. But still, this is a good choice for the ones who love to watch vampire movies, and the ones who got into the ''Blood Rage'' after playing the video game.
This was the first of the three movies I watched last week, and I would certainly choose this as the better one. The other two were ''Underworld Evolution'' (Another vampire story) and ''Merlin'' (A story of a wizards and magic). Rayne is a good choice, but only for a few.....even for me it was not as good as I expected!
Diving Out.....
