BITS Pilani
How can I ever forget this place. 333031 - Magical Number
I passed out of BITS in May 99. Four years of Hostel life. Looking back, It’s nostalgic, very nostalgic.
I had a few things which I needed to do in life before entering the professional world and believe me I could not have got a better experience in the whole of this country anywhere except BITS Pilani.
I am not going to get into the Admission process, academic excellence and all that stuff, which has been already reviewed earlier. This place makes a MAN out of a KID.
What did this place teach me ?
Responsibility
There is no concept of an Attendance Register. Simple and plain concept. “We will not force you to attend classes or take tests. We leave it you. You want classes, you attend classes.”. There is no force on any students. They decide which classes to attend, which classes not to attend. Everybody is responsible for their actions.
Time Management
I decide when I will start studying for my tests / compres. I will decide when to attend which course and which professor to attend. I will manage my time table so that I can fit in with the best possible professors.
Flexibility
I want to do a course on say A, but alas, this course is completely booked and I will not get a seat. What do I do. Well I register myself for some arbid course really, say “Life of Socrates”. 2 or 3 weeks later some people are bound to feel , Boy this course A is pathetic, I will drop out. Well am I not waiting for that. I go and grab the spot. (This whole concept of Selecting course is decided by something called a Priority number which is given to every student on the first day of every semester)
Independence
There was abundance of this. This is a very dangerous opening which you will have to use with care. Fortunately I did not fall too much in this trap. I am a reasonably independent person.
What I enjoyed and still recollect (Or I Miss ?)
OASIS : The cultural festival of BITS. Its fantastic. It’s beyond description
APOGEE : Called as Technical Exhibition, but it was more of a Film Festival.
You want more..
Lying down and enjoying a nice (is it ?) cup of tea or Shikanji in Sky Lawns
Mega chat sessions with your wingies running late into the night or early in the morning.
Enter the Mess and make a frowning face at the food and go to C’not for Dinner
Lovely winters where u can just cuddle and sleep the whole day
Play cards all night. Cricket all day
Ragging (It was very very friendly atleast when we were there, believe me)
Spending the Breaks between classes IC (Institute Cafetaria)
Night Outs before Exams.
Let everyone know in the Hostel, that next day is your D-day and wake u up by 6 in the morning positively.
The great travel from Chennai to New Delhi (almost 80% of the Train is BITSIANS).
MOVIES
Lots of places to see in Rajasthan – Jaipur, Jaisalmer, Jodhpur, Mt Abu, well lots and lots. Nobody to ask you for attendance. So you can plan and take 3 or 4 days off and have fun.
Lots of Interwing, Intermess, Inter college, Intracollege Cricket, hockey, basketball, football, TT etc. etc etc
Lots of Crosswords, Treasure Hunts, Beg Borrow Steals etc
There is lots an lots to write, will stop here. I am sure you will have an experience of your lifetime (FORGET ACADEMICS, I am not talking about that.We know where BITS is rated in India right?), which you will never forget in your life. These 4 years in Pilani is my treasure
I was homesick really in the initial couple of weeks in Pilani and I had 100% attendance in the first semester . When I passed out of BITS, my overall attendance was around 20%. When I used to go home for Holidays, I used to become hostel sick after a few days.
Well, if you can bear the heat, cold and the Boat ride journey by Bus from Delhi to Pilani, There is no better place to become a Complete Man / Lady than BITS Pilani
HAIL BITSIANS
by a proud BITSIAN
