On my last visit to Agra, we decided to visit the Bharatpur bird sanctuary as well. So we went in a group of about 15 people. It was a trip full of fun and we enjoyed the trip to the most. The climate was very pleasant as we happened to go in December. It was neither too cool nor too sunny in the day. We spent about 3 hours here and wished we could spend more.
The bird sanctuary is spread on 29 sq kms and this stretch can be easily covered by foot but due to lack of time we decided to hire a rickshaw. He charged a nominal rate, though I do not remember the exact fare now. The rickshaw puller proved to be a real blessing for us as we lacked knowledge. He knew his way well and was also trained in identifying bird species. So as he went forward, he showed the birds and also told us which species it belonged and the place from where it migrated.
He told us that there are about 380 species of birds there and showed us a few Siberian cranes and other birds. The most spectacular feature was Dalmatian pelicans, which was a real beauty standing with its wings spread. Its a sight which we still relish till today. The other variety of birds that we saw were egrets, herons, storks, geese, ducks, eagles, hawks, stints, kingfishers, owls etc to name few (others I have forgotten the names)
The sad part was that we had only one binocular that we all had to share. So do not forget to carry a binocular for watching the birds. The other sad part was that we forgot to take our camera along. If you are tired and in need of some refreshments, you have a refreshment stall there which can be used.
Though I am not a bird watcher, I would definitely like to revisit the place and would also like to go boating which I had missed on my first trip. This is an ideal place for all who love to experience the quietness of nature.
