My mom and I are both contact lens wearers and have been using Renu Fresh Multipurpose Solution for the past 12 years, in order to clean our contact lenses and also protect our eyes from dryness. My mom has been a contact lens wearer for over 30 years.
My mom and I have this daily habit of putting on our contact lenses even before brushing our teeth(so that toothpaste particles do not get into our eyes, while putting on the lenses) and we take for granted the fact that we are so comfortable with wearing contact lenses, that we can actually wear our contact lenses for prolonged periods of time(for around 10 to 12 hours) and get through the day with absolutely no optical discomfort!
Now, about 5 weeks ago, my mom and I visited our local Lawrence and Mayo branch, in order to complete the purchase of 4 pairs of yearly disposable contact lenses(2 for her and 2 for me). With our purchase, we were given a free sample(in the form of a 250 ml bottle) of a new lens cleaning solution, made by Bausch and Lomb, called Bio True.
About a week after our purchase, my mom and I(like we always do, once a year), switched to our new pairs of lenses. My mom also wanted to give our free sample of Bio True, a try, as she did not want to let it go to waste! I tried to dissuade her, as Renu Fresh, has been our go-to lens cleaning solution for the past 12 years and I strongly felt that it might be dangerous to switch(even temporarily) to a new lens cleaning solution.
After my mom began using Bio True, instead of Renu Fresh Multipurpose solution, the next 72 hours were excruciating for her! She found that she just couldn't wear her lenses any more(even though these lenses were brand new). Her eyes were either itchy, excessively red or excessively dry! Bio True, I am sorry to say, even made the lenses harder and dryer and alarmingly, one day, one lens actually got lodged in my mom's left eye and she calmly had to hydrate her left eye with pure saline in order to get the lens out!
Luckily, my mom had a spare pair of lenses and after having soaked the new spare pair of lenses overnight, with Renu solution(instead of Bio True), my mom's eyes became normal again! She could wear lenses again, without any problems!
She unfortunately, had to discard the trouble making pair of lenses, as no matter for how long this pair was soaked in the Renu solution, my mom still had problems, due to the lingering after effects of Bio True, which in my opinion, is the worst lens cleaning solution!
