Basti is a story of the people living in Ekta Nagar, who live in a spirit of brotherhood, trust and love.
Whether Hindu, Muslim, Sikh or Christian, people of every faith and creed live in peace and tranquility.
Vinayak Kulkami (Govind Namdeo) lives in Basti with his family, where he has spent his entire life teaching children.
A highly respected figure, everyone calls him 'Masterji' .
He has two sons & a daughter - Rama - (Samir Soni)
Satish - (Faisal Khan) and their sister, Pinky.
Because of his temperamental nature, Rama has not completed his graduation, nor managed to hold down a job.
Unlike their brother, soft-hearted and straightforward Satish and Pinky are busy studying.
Madhu is an orphan girl in Basti who is in love with Rama, but he is oblivious of her.
Kanta (Sadashiv Amrapurkar) is an underworld Don, who wields great power in Basti where he has has many successful but illegal businesses.
Natwar (Liyaqat Bari) is his henchman.
Natwar extorts money from the people of Basti by beating and terrorising them.
One day, whilst taking up the case of a eunuch, Rama has a tussle with Natwar and ends up in the police station.
The police torture Rama and warn him to keep away from Kanta and his cronies.
However the matter does not end there, and once again Rama beats Natwar very badly over a minor issue, which makes Rama a hero amongst the towns people.
Seth Karanjia (Kulbhushan Kharbanda) is big in construction.
His dream is to build hotels & high-rise buildings in the Basti region.
Kanta demands Rs.75 crores from Karanjia for Basti, but Karanjia thinks the amount is excessive.
Masterji on the other hand, wants a schools and hospitals, so that at least the children can be assured a bright future.
Circumstances then change and Kanta, who was previously demanding Rs. 75 crore from Karanjia now gives the entire land of Basti for the sum of one and a quarter rupees.
Bombay city's slums are due for an improvement at the hands of builder Karanjia, but a gangster, Kanta, asks for a price that is too high, leading to Karanjia recruiting Ramesh Kulkarni and some of his friends, paying them, and arming them with weapons to fight it out with Kanta's men.
This leads to a gang war, and Kanta's men are subdued.
Then Kanta gets together with a corrupt Minister (Pramod Muthu) and the Police Commissioner(Ranjit) and together they plan Hindu-Muslim riots, which leads to the death of Rama.
Enraged at this, Rama quiet and soft-spoken brother takes over, and the fight continues.
To make matters worse, Satish's unmarried sister gets pregnant, and commits suicide.
In a suicide note she indicts the Police Commissioner and the Minister who raped her.
Unable to bear the loss of his son and daughter, Vinayak, passes away.
Satish now has arranged for three funerals in a very short while, and goes about his task of revenge ruthlessly - until he finds out that he is being used as a pawn by Karanjia - and that he is on the hit list of the police, Kanta as well as Karanjia's men - and he has no place to run nor hide.
How does a Rs 75 crore deal end up being a mere one and quarter rupees?
