When I watched Lal Jose's Ayalum Njanum Thammil the lot of questions popped up in my mind does the doctor have a say on the patient life. What is his right. Can he go ahead and do a life surgery even in the absence of a written agreement by the patient's near and dear ones. Another thing can a MBBS degree make one a doctor. Should a doctor have prejudice. What is the role of ethics in this profession. Ayalum Njanum Thammil tries to answer some of this questions through the life of Dr Ravi Tharakan. Dr Ravi after completing his graduation lands up as a intern in a rural hospital in Munnar which is run by Dr Samuel. At first Ravi is not comfortable with Dr Samuel and his strict rules. His relationship with his mentor is not good. Ravi further suffers when he is unable to marry his sweet hear Sainu because of intervention of an inspector which is played by Kalabhavan Mani. In response to that Ravi refuses to treat the inspector's child when she is in a critical condition and Ravi is the only doctor available. Fortunately Dr Samuel comes in the nick of time and saves the child. However a malpractice suit is filed against Ravi by the Inspector and Dr Samuel is called as witness. Though Samuel reprimand Ravi heavily in private he stands by him during the integorration and tells that Ravi is innocent. This incident changes Ravi and he starts seeing Dr Samuel in a new light. He learns that when you are a doctor your patient is your first priority and everything else comes later. Ravi moves from that hospital, does his specilaization abroad and currently works as Cardiac Surgeon in a super speciality hospital. Movie also deals with the ethics issue there. How Ravi finds out less quality and expired valves are approved by the hospital inspection team for commission. It shows the ill effect of doing such things. The scene in which Ravi takes Rima Kallingal's character and show the child with one leg which was a direct result of her approving the expired valves was brilliant. It shows how we also become part of corruption in the society albeit not knowing it directly. Another issue they show is the signature on the consent form. When a dying child is brought to the hospital the child's father refuses surgery though it is the only way to save the child. However Ravi proceeds with the surgery, but unfortunately the child dies. Soon the hospital is vandalized and Dr Ravi is on a run. However it is shown that when the father had gone out, the mother had requested the doctor to save the child. It raises another question. What should a doctor do in such situation. Verbal approval can be changed any time. Can he take the risk. What will be the consequences. The film ends with Dr Ravi going back to Dr Samuel's hospital to serve the people there. Lal Jose had directed briallantly the journey of Dr Ravi Tharakan from a college graduate to a responsible and ethical cardiac surgeon. Prithiviraj and Prathap Pothen who plays Dr Ravi Tharakan and Dr Samuels respectively has done a brilliant job. Female characters have nothing much to do , however all the 3 ladies( Samvritha Sunil, Ramya Nambeesan and Rima Kallingal) have done justice to the roles given to them. Songs are beautiful especially the song Azalinte ayangalil sung by Nikhil Mathew. A beautiful movie which should be watched by everyone.
