The trailers of Avatar had created such a sensation that I was quite adamant with my husband that I wanted to see the movie. My husband who otherwise is not very keen in watching movies in theaters in the end agreed to take me out to watch the movie. After standing in the queue for a long time(for him 5 minutes are also long enough) we ultimately got the tickets for the movie. However we could manage to get only for the 2D version but I wanted to see the 3D version of the movie. But anyways something was better than nothing.
The movie is a typical James Cameron style movie. With a lot of money spent on the graphics and the visual effects. The sets were put up in New Zealand. One could not have witnessed a better forest world. A forest that is beyond your imagination. You’ll feel like Alice In Wonderland. The Trees the animals and the forest people are something that you would not have witnessed before. They all seem new and creative in the eyes of the audience. James Cameron takes us all to another world. A world that is far better than our world. A world that has love for man and animal alike.
Plot- The movie takes place on the planet of Pandora. A planet that is rich in the metal Unobtanium. Pandora is inhabited by the Na'vi race. This race is far superior than the human race. They are tall and lean creatures with rat like ears and a blue striped body. They worship the forest and the trees as their ancestors. The oldest tree is their most auspicious tree and it is under this tree that the Na'vi's live. Into their serene world enters Jack(Sam Worthington) a handicapped marine warrior. He has been sent by the scientist Grace(Sigourney Weaver) who wants him to learn their ways of life and collects samples so that she can carry on with her research. Teamed up with her is the army who want the Na'vis to evacuate the forest so they can exploit it for the metal which sells for 20millions a kilo. Jack is able to enter their world because of his strong heart and pure soul. He quickly learn their way of life through Neytiri(Zoe Saldana). Soon Jack falls in love with his new world and with Neytri. Grace too becomes a part of the people. Jack's love for these people makes him realize the futility of war and the destruction that the humans are planning and he says, "We dont have anything that they want. They have more than we can give them." To see what happens next, you can watch the movie.
Something to look out for- The picturization and the visual effects created by the director are something that you will not miss throughout the movie. The Huge animals like rhinos cats and the beautiful flying dragons which help them win the war are just a few things that are there for you to see. The huge Touch-me-not flowers, the hanging rocks and thetrees that glow in the night are some other things to look out for. They are so beautiful that Grace even in her dying moments can't miss out saying that she needs to collect some samples.
Something Lacking- Even though the beauty of the movie is worth remembering the one thing that disappoints the audience is the story line. It is here that the movie has a weakness or lets say the weak spot of the movie. The story is not anything out of the world. As the expectations with the movies were too high the audience feels a bit let down with the story line. The topic in itself may have been a very important one, with all the talk of the world coming to an end, etc. but then you don’t feel that its something to catch on to at the very first moment. I would not say that the directors lack in their creativity but there are some definite loop holes in the creative side. The movie may seem a bit similar to Aliens but would not say that they are both same. There it was E.T.s who we were fighting against and here it ourselves that we are fighting against.
The movie however teaches a lot(and that is if you want to learn). The way the Na'vi relate themselves to nature and feel the joys and the pains is something that has been superbly presented. Even if they kill an animal they have something good to say to them. Most importantly unlike us they don't kill for pleasure. The killing has a reason otherwise the people and they forest animals and trees live in harmony. It is because the human or the Sky People, as they are called, lack this love for nature that they do not welcome them in their world.
One can easily say that the movie tells the story of the greed of the humans and his desire to acquire everything at the cost of anything. Something that is very relevant even today. The destruction that a war can bring has been very clearly depicted in this movie. Man's wants are insatiable but then he never gives up. Here is a movie of Man Vs Nature where in the endNature is victorious but will the same happen in reality is a question that we may ask ourselves. For if we want the same to happen in reality then someone like Grace will have to create AVATARS too.
Anybody who loves to watch science fiction movies will love to watch the movie and will definitely remember it for the 3D effects that has been created in the movie. it has been said that Camereon had created a new camera for the shooting of these 3D effects. Now how well the audience will enjoy this movie is still to be seen and only then the success of this camera can told. Personally I would give the Movie a rating of 3.
You should all go and enjoy this sci-fi movie, its worth a try.
