Verdict: A comedy movie that could’ve been funnier.
When the trailer of Arjun Patiala was released, Diljit Dosanjh fans had high expectations from it. The trailer looked fresh and funny. Directed by Rohit Jugraj, who is known for his hit Punjabi movies Sardaar Ji and Sardaar Ji 2, Arjun Patiala is yet another cop entertainer but of a different kind. Supported well by Kriti Sanon, Varun Sharma, Seema Pahwa, Ronit Roy, andMohammed Zeeshan Ayyub, the movie has cameos by Sunny Leone and Pankaj Tripathi.
What’s Arjun Patiala About:
The film begins with an aspiring director pitching a story to a producer with the hopes of getting it made. This story revolves around Arjun Patiala ( Diljit Dosanjh) who has only one dream growing up and that is to become a police officer. Growing up, he used to idolized Inspector Gill ( Ronit Roy) who is now a DSP. Arjun works hard to earn a place in the Indian Police through the sports quota, just like his idol and soon his dream becomes a reality. He joins as a sub-inspector in-charge of the Ferozpur district police station where he meets the goofy Constable Onidda ( Varun Sharma) . Arjun wishes to fulfill his idol Inspector Gill’s dream of making Ferozpur a crime-free district. With Onidda, he plans to get rid of all the major goons and criminals of the district ( Baldev, Dilbagh, Sakool and Anda) . The biggest of them all is MLA Prapti Makkad ( Seema Pahwa) who the citizens of the district call Property Makaar. While he chalks up a brilliant plan, his love-interest journalist Ritu ( Kriti Sanon) of Tezz News worries about Arjun’s use of twisted means to get to his desired end. Will Arjun Patiala succeed?
What Works:
The movie talks about the issue of political-criminal nexus in a light-hearted way. Diljit Dosanjh is charming and does a good job as a cute yet fierce cop. Kriti Sanon does a decent job with her character. Varun Sharma has been typecasted yet again as the goofy side-kick. He does what he is good at – getting a few laughs. The songs and dance numbers in Arjun Patiala are a treat. The film’s concept is novel which was seen in the trailer. Unlike other silly comedy movies which tend to use vulgarity to gain attention, Arjun Patiala has gracefully stayed away from it. Director Rohit Jugraj should be appreciated for making a clean, family entertainer.
What Could’ve Been Better:
The film’s dialogues and the story-line has a lot of scope to be even funnier. A few jokes seem laborious and don’t work, like Diljit’s “drunk” voice. While the film borders on being a parody, it’s entertaining, different and makes for a fun one-time watch.
Why You Should Watch:
Looking for a light-hearted movie this weekend? Arjun Patiala is your best choice. If you are a Diljit Dosanjh fan then you should definitely watch the movie.
