Have you ever wanted to call a place of business but you couldn’t remember the phone number?  How about an old friend of yours that you haven’t spoken to in a long time but you don’t know if he/she still lives in your neighborhood?  Well if you answered “yes” to either of those questions then I have the solution.  Her in the United States we have a book called the “yellow pages”.  I’m sure most other countries have similar books like we do.

Let me tell you how useful it is for me, and how the yellow pages are set up in my state.

Verizon Yellow Pages

Verizon is the name of my phone company here in Pennslyvania and every year we receive a big “yellow” book called the Yellow pages I’m not certain why they decided to give this book that name because all the pages are “not” yellow.  In fact the only pages that are yellow in this book is at the back.  In the yellow pages towards the back of the book you can find any business that is located in your local area.  If you wanted to find a place to eat, just go to the yellow pages and look up restraunts and you will get a list of places to choose from.  I like this because sometimes I need to find a car insurance place and all I have to do is check out the yellow pages and I can choose from a variety of options.

In the begging of the phone book, that is what I call it.  You have a listing of all your local law inforcement agencies for example 911 is your emergency number to call.  It has the police, the ambulance, the fire department and poison control center’s phone numbers right at your finger tip.  This is helpful when you might be in a rush to find that emergency number.  It also includes a lot of information about your phone company as well.

Then you begin your list of resident phone numbers all in alphabetical order.  Those are the numbers of the homes of people in your area.  Their last names are show first as normally they should be.  If you looked up “John” cause it’s the first name then I’m sure there would be a long list. So “Smith” narrows it down more for you.  Then you get into what is called the “blue pages” of the book.  This is a listing of all your government and local companies along with all the area school districts.  It also has listings for several “help” hotlines for example.  Women being abused, run away hotline, missing children hotline, alcoholics hotline and child abuse hot line.  This is a great part of the book.

I have found myself using this book more often then not.  I love my Yellow Pages and I don’t think I could live with out it.(Oh well maybe that is taken it a little to far? Ha, ha).  There is only one problem with the yellow pages, and that is every county has their own.  So say I wanted to locate a company in Indiana PA, well I couldn’t open up my yellow pages and find the company because it wont be listed.  I would have to call 411 and request them to locate the number for me, or I could call the phone company and ask them to send me a yellow page book from that county.

However for the use in my area I use this book often.  I get upset when I can’t find it around the house.  (This happens quit often for some odd reason) I don’t understand why someone in my house would be hiding the phone book from me do you?  Hmm maybe because I love to chat on the phone with friends?  Oh well anyway I love this book and I hold it up with great standards and it is very, very helpful to me.   I know others who feel the same about their precious yellow page book.!
