Anupam's Coastal Express - Located at a rather non descript spot in the metropolis, is this nice sea food restaurant called Anupam's Coastal Expresswhose forte is Mangalorean Cusine. It had been a while since I went to a joint only to eat on a saturday evening. But a small neon sign ''Bar Attached'' rekindled my spirits. Although it looks pretty mediocre from the outside, it is surprisingly plush inside. I hate A/C so I headed to the 2nd Floor and the place was almost full. Luckily me and jayant hung around for a while patiently and occasionally stared at a coupla people who where sitting at the tables too long after paying the bill. Not a nice thing to do but we hate waiting so... Anyway, the captain and the waiters were extremely sweet and courteous.

They were pretty professional for a small place like that, by getting the temperature of the beer bottle approved before opening it. Impressive. I still don't understand why the Tables lacked table cloth. Food for thought. Hey that reminds us.. we need to order something. What have they got? Whoa almost half the Arabian sea. Squid (Jayant hmm Me: Yum!), Mussle (Me: ugh), Shell Fish (Jayant: Ugh!), Prawns (Jayant : awk! Me: Yum), Crab, Fish -> Sear, Kane, Pomfret, Karimeen etc etc.. Plus the typical Neer Dosa, Kori Roti and the in famous Kundapur Chicken. Since rest of the sea food was partially appealing to both of us, we decided to stick to our common likes, which boiled down to Fish and Chicken. Ha! so much for going to a Sea Food speciality restaurant.

First we had a Sear fish Tava Fry, btw they have 4 variants of fry for any kind of fish you order. Others are Rava Fry, Naked Fry and some other fry. Avoid Naked fry as it has never been rated good by anyone I know in any place so far. I case you know better pls go for the naked thing. Then the other thing which was recomended by a friend was Ghee Roast Chicken another lesser known mangalorean dish, we got it and it was o man, made me guilty of eating something so rich... and just to try something non mangy we asked for Egg chilly to try their chinese cooking skills and my self proclaimed prowess for food and they passed with flying colours it had a very upmarket flavour and the stull just melted it my mouth, it has very little garbage along with it, I mean garnish.

Somehow I has always felt that these kinds of speciality restaurants should stick to their niche, no offer these typical ''every under the sun'' options (Chinese, Andhra, Mexican, Continental, Moghulai etc) like the notorious 'New Shanti Sagar's around the town. Anyway these guys had Chinese and Punjabi other than their speciality. After a while, I bumped into some more friends there who also thought that the place was cool and the reason was not so expensive alcohol. HA! people..! It was time to order the main course although the captian never reminded us of the closing time. There were just serving without any questions till almost midnight. We were very excited about kundapur chicken, but as out ill luck would have it my friends at the other table just ordered the last of it. Grrr! @#$

So we settled for Chicken sukka and Neer Dosa and a coupla sannas and Kane fish (bloody long one, thought it was a baby eel) curry. Everything was nice. Also ask the waiters if you are not sure of the quantity or the quality. It helps if you are thick gravy liker or thin, if you prefer bony fish or a fillet. Actually there is no boneless funda in this cusine. So beware. Probably next time I go there with someone who likes serious seafood I will try the squids and prawns. I never be able to review Mussels or shellfish 'cause am allergic or whatever to them first and last time I tried my hair stood up and almost had a blackout.

Finally the bill came to 1000 bucks for two guys including alcohol. A little on the higher side but you wouldn't mind that after eating some excellent food and interacting with nice people who almost always give you what you want with a warm smile.
