A Reviewer asked me to write on a Hindi film called ANGOOR. I was wondering how this(L)ANGOOR was going to fulfill this wish and just began to write what I knew and understood from memory!

Shanti, for you .

A rip roaring take off on "A Comedy of Errors" by W Shakespeare.

Gulzar, the most prolific writer, Director, Screenplay and Lyricist of all times, has outdone every bone of comedy in this film and he has been helped by none other than the really tongue in cheek Sanjeev Kumar(reminds me of FE) and Deven Verma(reminds me of **DayaVAN).oops that is my comedy of errors.

The film is so infectious!

A celebrated father, Utpal Dutt, has become father of twins and has aptly named both of them Ashok, logic behind it is that, "Will naming them differently help you in anyway differentiate them altogether?". Kya kapde badalne se ya naam badalne se pehchaan badal sakti hai? True.

While on a journey by ship the father comes across another set of twin boys and starts his journey. The ship meets with a disaster and the twins get separated; Ashok with one of the other twin set of boys and Ashok with one of the other twin set of boys!. err. well I hope you got that!

Now begins the roller coaster ride which has been brought to a phenomenal peak of comedy by **Sanjeev K and Deven V.

1st Set; we will call them **SD1:)

They are a very recognised set in this small town and are known for their honesty and good will created amply by their father Utpal Dutt. S1 has his beautiful saali along with his wife, Moushmi Chaterjee, who is insanely jealous of her husbands flirtatious antics and constantly nagging. Whenever S1 has a problem with his wife he promptly sets out to sleep at a very good friends(lady), Padma Chavan, (a stalwart from Marathi cinema), and the goes back home only when his wife has settled her jealous fits! D1, is very shy by nature and fiercely LOYAL to S1. He is the paranoid and perpetual comic who thinks about everything non existent that is going to happen if his master S1 does not mend his ways! He is also married to Aroona Irani, who is exactly antipodal to D1. There, thats the ANGOOR of the first type, typically bitter sweet.

2nd Set; we shall call them SD2:)

This set is a very business oriented set, where S2 is a detective novel freak and every activity around him is regarded with the microscopic eye of the SHERLOCK HOLMES type. They are in the jewellery business and thats what sets a paranoia of every onlooker being a member of a GANG and plotting against them. D2 is a carefree soul but again fiercely LOYAL to S2. He is also a little flirtatious by nature.

Now we come to the VINYARD where these two sets mix to make a rip roaringly yet very spicily flavored comedy of errors called'ANGOOR'! **So lets mix the SD1 & SD2 to make a heady mix that will have you in splits and bless the comic soul of Gulzar for making such a film:)

SD2 arrive to this small town the same time as S1's wife decides to go off on a tangent to get a HAAR(necklace) from a jeweller of repute because she wants it! So S1 sets out and meets this jeweller adn tells her about the necklace that has to be delivered within the given deadline OR S1** will meet a similar fate! Then he vows that he will only reach home when he has the necklace in hand!

SD2 have been escorted to a Guest House in the town an\d they both are carrying their belongings close to their bodies and looking at every bystander very suspiciously thinking each one is a part of a GANG! I have just been able to describe the scenario, but you have to watch Sanjeev kumar doing it with panache and histrionics that only he is capable of and please also relive in your mind his typical dialogue delivery to enjoy this moment! Now begins a mayhem of mistaken identity and what ensues is a hilarious saga of the GANG behind SD2 and the agony of S1 to make a failsafe delivery of the necklace. Mix with it the scene between Aroona Irani andD2 and their hilarious pakoda making scene where BHAANG is mixed in them to get the party going. The song that follows this scene and Irani in the throes of naughty laughter & seducing the wrongD make you almost fall off your seats!

What happens towards the end? Well let me not spoil the mix and spill **the bubbly:)

Of the cast:

Sanjeev Kumar   : Absolutely vintage WINE

Sanjeev Kumar   : Absolutely vintage WINE

Utpal Dutt            : Dry and smooth with spicy flavor. Goes best with spicy food

Moushmi Chat.  : Bitter sweet port. Will go with everything thats called LIFE with a WIFE

Deepti Naval       : Fruity, Sweet and spicy Not too dry. This wine is a must in every MIYA's                                     Life;)

Deven Verma     : Champagne stuff. Raise your glasses and raise a TOAST to all of the above

For all cine lovers, this is one film that you can proudly carry with you in your precious DVD collections and display it when amoungst company of like minded friends. Ideal during the Holi festival, ideal during just a casual sitdown and nothing to do and ideal during a deliberate wining outing:)

The cast, crew and all the others who have been associated with the making of this film have had a rip roaring time and have thoroughly enjoyed making this fantastic ANGOOR mix up. Let me end this typically by asking you, what would you think really happens when the S twins marry and the D twins marry? Do they have twins again OR do they have quadruplets?

),the film ends with W Shakespeare winking back at you through his portrait!
