Got my Kindle 2 on October 2011 in Canberra (feels awful for paying AUD 149 when I could've got it cheaper in Hong Kong. blaming it on impulsive shopping for now).
Kindle 2 does everything as advertised. that is to read books wherever/whenever. Sony's ebook reader can't even get this one simple thing right! It's all black n white and it's nothing of an issue since I don't read children's books with Mr. Fluffy rabbit in all his wonderful colors. Battery life is simply amazing. I was pretty skeptical about the month long battery life in the adverts, but it does last for almost a month. It has 4GB built in memory and I have absolutely nothing to complain about. I pretty darn sure I wont be reading 13,000 books on my kindle. The kindle store integration and deliver through wifi is the only way to do it and Amazon did it perfectly. The e-ink is one of those inventions that would be remembered and cherished for a very long time me thinks. After reading on a kindle, no other device would feel right for reading. That's just me though. One minor issue is that you must have abnormally big hands to use the kindle with one hand (or maybe my hands a smaller) either way to flip the page you gotta use the free hand, but it's not something very hard to get used to. I found kindle extremely useful on long hauls and airport transits. A cold glass of beer and a kindle in hand, time flies pleasantly :)
I have only one feature request though. It is not a problem but it would be wonderful if Amazon added strips of LED lights on the screen corners to provide lighting in the dark.
Would I recommend kindle 2 to you? yes ofcourse if you love reading and wouldn't mind parting with USD 100 for the innumerable hours of pleasurable reading in style. I wouldn't recommend a kindle fire though. If you want a tablet, get an ipad or something else and install the kindle app. Seriously, why are you overdoing it with a fancy pants tablet and telling us it's a "color ebook reader" Amazon?
