First Airlift, Neerja and now Aligarh, finally Bollywood is giving importance to scripts based on true stories. The films that aren't typical, films that boldly depict how reality is stranger than fiction in many instances. Aligarh, too, is a movie that deals with some of the most burning issues that haunt our society, 'the freedom to be who we are'. Such is the story of late Dr. Siras, who was a Marathi professor in AMU and was wrongly removed from his post for his sexual orientation.
The actors in central role are Manoj Bajpayee, Rajkumar Rao, Ashish Vidyarthi in this biopic that has garnered critical acclaim. I always felt that Manoj Bajpayee is one of the best and most underrated actor in Hindi cinema. He has once again blown my mind with his brilliance. His calm yet strong portrayal of Dr. Siras on screen is inspiring. A man who was wrongly removed from his job, boldly fights the system in the court of law and wins. The court room scenes were groundbreaking, about time that we openly deal with these issues, treat people with different sexual orientation as people and not like a stain on the society or a laughing stock. Though the theater where I watched this movie was full of people who were laughing and making fun of the characters. I wonder when will the mindset truly change and people will start to accept and respect others. Perhaps, Aligarh can be a step in that direction.
Hansal Mehta's direction is moving and heart-touching. The flow of the movie is intense. Also his way of tackling with such a sensitive story is amazing. A truly inspiring, yet heart-wrenching tale of an individual who was put through hell for being different than other people. Aligarh is an excellent movie and a must-watch in my personal opinion.
