When was the last time you watched a non-fiction patriotic movie in a packed theater amidst thundering applause? If I am not mistaken, it was Border, way back in 1997 which was the which had such great mass appeal. No other movie has been so successful in drawing such a large audience to packed theaters.

Plot

Airlift is based on a true story, the story of the world's largest air-evacuation operation undertaken proudly by India, executed by Air India. But the story is not really about the evacuation, neither this is about Air India. The story is about the hardships faced by Indian expatriates in Kuwait who were rendered homeless and hopeless after an Iraqi invasion.

The story is centered around  Ranjit Katiyal(AK) who portrays the role played by Sunny Matthews in the real event. There are some manipulations to the original plot, but the essence still remains the same. The movie proceeds to show the suffering that 1.7 lakh Indians went through for one long month before they could be rescued. The story is centered around the evolution of Ranjit from an arrogant, shrewd businessman to a strong leader who forgoes everything for his compatriots. The plot is fast paced and keeps you glued to the edge of the seat. You wouldn't want to miss a single moment.

Cast, Screenplay

The screenplay and performances are outstanding. Everyone has given their very best towards the movie and it shows. AK has been phenomenal. He started a reform of his on-screen performances with Holiday, further honed it with Baby, and has made it impeccable with Airlift. Inaamulhaq has given a great performance as Major Khalaf and so have many others. There are a few eccentric characters thrown in, and they do make their presence felt.

Music

There's not much in terms of music, but then, Airlift was never meant to be a musical. There's a peppy number at the start, but it's the closing number(tu bhoola jise) which actually captures your heart and lingers there. There are a couple of other numbers but they are quite forgettable.

Conclusion

An absolute delight, a definite must watch. Movies possessing this grade of finesse are very rarely seen. Don't miss it!
