As an alternative to the high-tech trainers, Rod Lavers are great little shoes. I have the green ones with the mesh top, and although they have no support for the fast, twisting hard-court game that anyone plays anymore, they are really comfortable, and cool retro wear.
The price is in line with the ‘retro’ trend for clothing now. They ain’t cheap, but not overly expensive either. You can get them for $59.00 almost anywhere- the best place to but in online at https://eastbay.com, or if you shop around you can usually find them for as low as $49.00 dollars.
When I was growing up and learning to play Tennis with my Rod Laver Max Ply racquet, I owned a pair of the Rod Lavers, and played in them- I burned through them faster than a bullet through hot butter! I used to be a toe dragger, and the big toe of my left foot was well ventilated before the soles of the shoes showed any appreciable wear.
Nowadays I wear the Rod Lavers to knock around in. They have an inner arch support that is feels very nice when you spend a few hours walking. And the soles are firmer than most competitive shoes are today. When they get dirty, toss ‘em into the cold-water wash and let ‘em hang out to dry- there’s no shrinkage.
The mesh top is cooler than the canvas top, and much cooler than the leather (I’m using the word ‘cool’ in the physical sense not the attitude sense- although the attitude meaning works as well.
I highly recommend anyone buying a pair- for Summer slouching!
