Near the end of the movie, someone asks John McClane(Bruce Willis), the five-time hero of the Die Hard series if he chases action, or if the action seems to find him; his answer: I am still trying to figure that out.
The plot of this 2013 movie is a little stretched; a supposedly innocent political prisoner by the name of Komarov(Sebastian Koch) has been framed by a fellow Muscovite Chagarin(Sergei Kolesnikov). When he faces death, he is rescued by Jack McClane, son of John, who has been in Russia since many years, and whom John has come to meet on a holiday. John happens to be near the courthouse when the incident takes place, and in a rough car-chase, orchestrated very well in the movie. John, his son Jack(Jai Courtney) and Komarov escape. John discovers that his son is actually a CIA agent and is on a mission to save Komarov and recover some secrets that would be useful to the US of America.
Enter Irina(the ravishing Yuliya Snigir), who is the daughter of Komarov. The latter agrees to share a secret file that contains the ill-deeds of Chagarin on condition that he and his daughter Irina get a safe passage out of Russia. When things start turning ugly, both John and Jack cooperate to save the world in the next 1 hour. And that's as much as I can write without adding spoilers.
Bruce is over 50 and does not hide his age; however, his antics and action shots belie the age, and cause viewing to become confusing: how can he survive all that he does in the movie? With stuntmen, of course, And clever editing, cinematography, mirrors and ropes and pulleys to make him stay in the air for lots of time in spite of the pull of mother Earth and gravity!
The action scenes are well-shot, as is the shattering, noisy climax. Of course, all the main heroes survive to tell the story and to smile at the cameras at the end!
On the whole, actors are average, and the plot is a little unbelievably simplistic. However, I do recommend the movie to those who haven't seen earlier movies in this franchise to get a feel of what the action will be like in this set of movies.
