IT !. Review on A Child Called It - Dave Pelzer

A CHILD CALLED IT is the first book in a series. It is a small Book with only 184 pages. It was released in 1995 by the the Health Communications Publishing House.

This Book Biography that was written by Dave Pelzer. It is about what happened from when he was first born up to age twelve.

I found that it was a moving story about the terrible things that happened in his life.

His Book is easy to understand because of his graphic description.

THE BOOK:

He lived in a Mother that was an alcoholic. She was very abusive to him

Dave was like all young Boys and he was inquisitive. This got him into a lot of trouble and it gave his Mother a reason to discipline him. She thinks of a lot of ways to punish him.

At first she had him stand in the corner for hours. Then she moved the abuse up a notch by sending him to bed without dinner.

She made Dave to all the household chores. She decided that he no longer live in the House and their Garage becomes his new Home.

She next thought us a new way to abuse him when she locked him in a Bathroom with a Bucket filled with Ammonia and Clorox. She called this the ''gas chamber treatment''!

I was shocked when I read that his Mother treated to kill him with a Knife. She doesn't kill him but the knife goes in so deep that he is covered with blood.

Covered in blood he crawls over to his Father, (who is reading a Newspaper). His Father takes one look at him and says, ''You better get back to his chores if you don't want to make your Mother more angry''!

He has Father, (that is afraid of his Wife) and four Brothers. They are sympathetic to what is happening to Dave but afraid to help him.

He becomes physically and emotionally scared when she decides to make him a ''non-person'' by never saying his name and calling him ''It''.

Mr. Ziegler, (his Principal), and a few of the Teachers at his School finally realizes what is happening to Dave. He reports this. Dave is taken away from his Family and put in a Foster Care Home.

There is a lot more in this Book but I will leave you to find out what it is if you decide to read it.

WHAT I FELT:

We all have heard of dysfunctional Families but Dave's went well beyond that.

It does give you some hope that there are People who are working in Schools that are willing to help a Child in trouble.

We would all love to think our Children grown up in a safe and happy World. It is easy to forget that our Homes are not the same and terrible things can happen behind closed doors.

Why didn't the Neighbours notice what was happening? Why didn't his Father and Brother help him?

IN CONCLUSION:

This Book moved me so much I am crying as I am typing this review.

This is a ''must read'' Book and I highly recommend it to you.
