First of all lemme welcome u all ,wishing u a gr8 year ahead!!!Okay moving on............... Mind blowing, mind bending ’n brilliant r the words to describe this new thriller. If u ’ve read Sidney Sheldons ’’TELL ME UR DREAMS’’ ’n liked it,then u surely r goin’ to luv this one for sure. [But lemme be clear, this movie is no way an ADAPTATION of this book ’n there is no relation between the charecters in the novel ’n the movie ,’n I have just used the examples from the novel to give an idea to the readers of what is expected from this movie].This movie deals with a schezophrenic, paranoid mental disorder (not exactly the word,but.. )called ’’Mutiple Personality Disorder’’ ’n a much more involved schezophrenic related traumas that a person undergoes. So a very different movie ,btw isnt it boring to watch movies with everything spelt out to u always?
To give the background, the persons having symptoms of MPD, ’ve many diverse personalities residing in them ,’n many a times can involuntarily control the actions of a person without even his knowledge .In many cases the person is totally unaware of these personalities ’n simply cant believe that he can be responsible for any of the acts committed .It is something like 2 or 3 different persons residing in one body . Interestingly these personalities can intereact with one another sometimes ’n uses the person as a host to carry out their activities.TO look at this thro’ another perspective ,each of these charecters can simply be his strong imaginations ,but so stroong enuff to make oneself beleive at times to be a different charecter . This syndrome has a divided opinion in the medical world ’n lots of debate. This problem usually stems from disturbed childhood or loneliness or related issues. Its a state of mind where there is a thinline between the real ’n illusionary world. This just highlights the different dimensions a human mind is quite capable of ,’n what we percieve as eccentric or lunatic ,is simply bcoz a normal human being just couldnt comprehend the amazing inner powers of the human mind.
The central theme of the movie is exactly the same ,with a twist . SO a very uncanny movie for a change. In the end its told that, this is the story of a nobel prize winner Dr NAsh,but for me the movie is beyond the life of just an eccentrically brilliant individual. This movie indeed has drawn widespread accolades especially from the medical world for bringing into light the traumas 'n tabboos attached with the life of a schezophrenic .Inspite the movie deals with a very serious topic ,but nutty , wry dialogues will ’ve u in splits all thro’ the movie. The pace of the movie ’ll leave u offgurad many a times. In one scene u may be enjoying the jokes ’n the very next scene ,there is a growing sense of steely chill running down ur spine. Eventho’ the movie potrays the effects of MPD with chilling effect,it hurries thro’ the challenging phase of rehabilitaion the patient undertakes to shake off the illusions ’n its all over in just 1.5 hrs.
Rusell Crowe as a cocky mathematical genius ,has given a powerul performance ,’n is moulded in a totally different role. His transformation as the movie progresses ,is quite ammmhhazing. All the support casts r equally perfect ,esp Crowe’s prodigal roommate.Jeniffer COnnelly as his wife ,is picthed in a very imp charecter ’n jells perfectly to her rollercoaster role ranging from a sexy flirtatious girl to a hysterical mother dealing with an ecentric guy ,but still rallying behind him inspite of all the circumstances. In all Rusell is definitely a fore runner for Oscars with his role in this movie.Anyway Oscars is up for grabs this year, with all the movies from big directors/stars turning out to be a damp squib this season.
In all a gr8 movie ,if u can just give this a try ’n watch this from a different perspective !!!!!It just shows how fortunate a normal human being is, for not being born as a genius, for all genius has a streak of eccentricty attached with them ’n one may shudder as one explores as to what may be the root cause behind all that!!
Infact Nash’s case is much more complicated with the mental problems extending beyond MPD and having traces of hallucinations etc.
[THOSE WHO HAVENT WATCHED THE MOVIE SKIP THE NEXT PART]
Infact hallucinations includes those schezophrenic symptoms where he visualises imaginary ppl . This is evident in the movie ,in a scene in a college where he keeps talking to his imaginary friends like his roomamte ’n keeps prancing around the campus, with all students paoking fun at him.
While MPD is evident where he believes himself to be deputed by a US defence officer to crack code ’n this is seen again later on in the movie after marriage where he wud have created a working lab of his own in the backyard. If u analyse this case its evident he himself belives to be working for Penatagon on a major secret mission ’n he himself takes on a new identity.
Infact there is a very complex interwoven symptoms of hallucinations ’n dissociative identity disorder , in this movie , ’n leaves a lot for viewers to ponder upon ’n realise the amazing astounding powers our brain is quite capable of .(if it is just allowed to have its own way.)
