Here is my list(in no particular order) for “10 best picturized songs of Bollywood”. I don’t think I could have considered the song in separation to the movie purely due to its visual extravagance. I think it has to be relevantly placed with good performances backed up by good camera work and of course be a beautiful song to hear as well.
Chalka Chalka Re(Saathiya) – Opening song of the movie Saathiya. The reason for my liking this song is primarily music(which I believe is a must for anyone to like the song visually too). Why A.R. Rehman is considered to be brilliant is pretty evident from this number if one tries to catch the subtle effects he puts here and there. The naughty small tricks that Rani and Vivek play in this song are quite hilarious. The song is very relevantly placed in the movie and is rendered with reality which I believe was the highlight of this movie. The setting, though a very ordinary suburban home has been utilized to the fullest by the director and the chorographer.
Saathiya Saathiya(Saathiya) – The theme song of the movie Saathiya and the only dream sequence in the movie. With a movie so grounded in reality, I personally think that it was a brilliant effort on the part of the director and the choreographer not to make it look out of place. This song set in such beautiful and scenic surroundings with the costumes of the dancers complementing them equally brilliantly. The song again is very melodious and I personally like this song since it reminds me of the early days of my marriage when this movie was just released. J. It remains my favorite songs of all time.
Rang Barse(Silsila) – Bachchan Saab’s voice has rendered this song immortal. This song is played on every single music system in every single home in India on every single Holi. The picturization was equally brilliant with Bachchan Saab shown losing it completely on the day of Holi for his lover Rekha right in front of her husband played by Sanjeev Kumar. Four great actors of all time – Amitabh, Sanjeev, Rekha and Jaya all in a single frame! The song had to be brilliant. One is gripped by the drama in this song and the turn that story takes during this. The expressions on the face of Sanjeev Kumar and Jaya Bhaduri are worth watching. Superb.!
Bade Achche Lagte Hain(Balika Badhu) – How innocent can a couple can look? Watch this song and you will know. The melody is unforgettable and so are the settings. Though moonlight used to be portrayed in our Hindi movies as diffused sunlight(which has what been done in the song) but it still has come out very beautifully. The feelings of a husband for a newly wedded wife, as she is about to leave him and go soon after the wedding, have been beautifully portrayed.
Ye Jo Desh Hai Tera(Swadesh) – Though the movie had been stretched a bit too far for my liking, but I really adored this song. Shahrukh has given probably the best performance of his life in this movie and looks quite convincing as a NASA scientist. The flashing glimpses of India in his memory in this song are very gripping and the camera work is just superb. Rehman has again come out with a gem of song. I actually felt goose bumps seeing this song.
Waqt Ne Kiya Kya Hasin Sitam(Kagaz Ke Phool) - Gurudutt was the master showman of the black and white era. And his movies are taken as case studies around the country in films institutes to demonstrate the use of lighting, shades and shadows to highlight mood in the films. If one observes carefully he did not often use ambient lighting in his films which renders the frame lit uniformly. He always preferred point lights and spot lights to propound the melancholy mood so artistically that each of his film frames became a painting. I absolutely adored his style and this song is shot in his characteristic style. It’s simply awesome.
Chaiya Chaiya(Dil Se) - The song title has been used over the years to indicate jumping around to the point of sounding like a cliché but I think that this number was picturized in a very innovative way. Many people went to see Dil Se only due to this song. Malaika and Shahrukh do a wonderful job not to have fallen off the train while shooting specially with Shahrukh’s style of jumping. The whole song has come out very dynamic due to the novel concept and some superb camera work.
Wo Ladki Hai Kahan(Dil Chahta Hai) - This song still brings a smile to my face whenever I see it. Especially when I see Saif dressed in the 50s attire and wearing those “Jadugar Pasha” type moustaches. The “bird” action of this sing became very popular and the song was very hummable too. Don’t think anyone would have looked more hilarious than Saif in this.
Ek Hasina Thi, Ek Diwana Tha(Karz) - I consider this to be one of its kind. Not only the music was outstanding(with that haunting guitar tune which was the highlight of the movie) but the song was shot in a very unique way. That cardboard cut out jeep and the negative print running in the background of Rishi Kapoor and Teena Munim propounded the stage performance without using any effects which would have been impossible on a real stage performance. The cameraman uses the pan, orbit and dolly to spectacular effect. Expressions on Simi’s face are worth watching. The song really takes the movie forward in a very interesting way. Kudos to Subhash Ghai for such a grand movie and a spectacular song.
Humko Aajkal Hai Intezar(Sailaab) - Mmmmmmmmm.Madhuri! This is one song which I think Madhuri carries on her own shoulders. Not that the song is not wonderful to hear but it would not have been what it was had there been no Madhuri in it. She dresses in a smallish Maharashtrian choli and dhoti(like a fisherwoman) and looks very hot indeed. As we all know she was the best dancer in business in her days and she clearly demonstrates her dancing prowess here. A spectacle!
Other songs that I found very interesting to watch are:
Ab to hai tumse, har khushi apni(Abhiman)
Choti Si Aasha(Roja)
Ae Dil-E-Nadan(Razia Sultan)
Morni Baga Mein Naache(Lamhe)
Tanhai(Dil Chahta Hai)
Mangalayam(Saathiya)
Tere Bina Zindagi Se Shikwa to Nahin(Aandhi)
