Ajay Devgn is one of the best actor Indian Film Industry ever produced, and he is a versatile actor, who can play any kind of roles, be it emotional, powerful, villainous, comic, or the normal dramatic roles, but whatever role he play, he did his best and sets a benchmark for other actors. He was born as Vishal Devgan on 2nd April 1969 in New Delhi to the house of famous Stunt Director Veeru Devgan. He had also directed one and produced some movies. Here I am presenting his top 10 movies as actor, as per my own likings, included only those movies which I have seen.
Gangaajal (Aug2003) - On top of my list of Ajay-Devgn starred favorites movies stands this flick - Gangaajal, which was directed by renowned film-maker Prakash Jha. The first of the powerful-cop role I've sen was in this movie. The movie is based on real incidents, in movie its based on hooliganism prevailing in a Bihar district Tejpur, and for removing this filth an honest-yet-powerful police officer is required, hence came Ajay in the role of SP Amit Kumar. He played the role wonderfully, showing all the shades of a honest policeman.
Singham (Jul2011) - Directed by Rohit Shetty, Ajay in role of Ins. Bajirao Singham. 2nd best on my list again starred Ajay as a police-officer, and again he is honest and powerful, but this role is totally different from Gangaajal one. Here the inspector is more powerful, and beat the goons in the goons' way unlike Gangaajal where he is following more on the path of rules. Here the policewalla only knows that to prevail sanity, one has to break the goons' heads. Two different performances by Ajay, equally powerful and lovable.
Once Upon A Time In Mumbaai (Jul2010) - Directed by Milan Luthria, Role - Don Sultan Mirza. This role exactly opposite to previous two, this time Ajay played a DOn, a negative character, Don who has rules, and anbody who broke those unwritten rules will have no right to live, this character is based on a real-life Don of Mumbai Haji Mastan. The role demands power, and perfect actions for the don who take charisma with him wherever he goes, but he too love somebody, and he also have a soft heart, Ajay perfected the role.
Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam (Jun1999) - Director: Sanjay Leela Bhansali, Role: Lawyer Vanraj. This role is typical dramatical but yet different as this person who is a lawyer in profession has a shy nature and soft-spoken, who cannot break anybosy's heart, and even can't killed an ant, but love, yes love he can do passionately. Ajay excels in this sidekick-of-a-role, and stands tall against Salman Khan who had more of screen appearance.
Golmaal (Jul2006) - Director: Rohit Shetty, Role: College Dropout Gopal. Gang of 4 useless guys who don't have anything to do other than looting other guys by their pranks and who is the boss - it's Gopal. This comedy movie demands funny side of Ajay Devgn, and the actor who is more knows for his serious-dramatic roles, can you expect a funny action, yes, he delievered it, he is one of the best to play that comic role.
Omkara (Jul2006) - Director: Vishal Bhardwaj, Role: A local-powerful Goonda Omkara aka Omi. Just after 14 days of release of fun movie Golmaal, this got released and which bear a totally different image of Ajay, this time he is in the role of a local UP-Bihar type Goon, who works for a politician, and help them in conquering elections, which is the truth of many states of India. The film is Indianized version of Shakespeare's Othello as said, and Ajay was loved in the -ve role of political goon.
Apharan (Dec2005) - Director: Prakash Jha, Role: An unemployed youth later a kidnapper Ajay Shastri. This one was one more political drama from the pen of Prakash Jha, which required someone who can depict the unemployed youth of small towns based out of UP/Bihar, and who can do anything to get the job, not just bribing but kidnapping too, and hence he becomes the left hand of goon-cum-political leader Tabrez Alam, and Ajay was the perfect choce as he has already played many such kind of serious roles.
Deewangee (Oct2002) - Director: Anees Bazmee, Role: A murderer Tarang. One of the best villianious performance and that too done by Ajay Devgn is in this film, for which he also got awards. A murderer who make his lawyer to believe that the murder which he committed was because of his split-personality disorder, but in real it was not like that, and to pull off that act of convincing other is wonderfully performed by Ajay Devgn.
Yuva (May2004) - Director: Mani Ratnam, Role: A youth leader Michael Mukherjee. Michael is young, Michael is full of energy, and Michael wants to clean corruption by entering into corrupted world of politics, and for him nobody can stand in the way. The role demands energy, and youthfulness, which Ajay showed despite his age, and the way he talked to biggies of politics, will certainly inspire many youths to do somethng great for their country, a wonderful message given through the film.
Tango Charlie (Mar2005) - Director: Mani Shankar, Role: Hawaldar Mohammed Ali. It's hard times in India and Jawans had to face not only border issues but some iner issues like naxalites, riots and many more, and they just have to follow the orders and execute whatever comes in between. Wonderfully executed movie by Mani Shankar, wher Ajay got a sidekick role in front of Bobby Deol looked amazed to many, but this was a perfect characterization for Ajay's stature, where he just have to play his role of force-men, shedding any emotions, and he did it wonderfully.
Well that's my top-list but that's not all, many movies of him you can watch if you havent :O and you can see many shades of him. I can name a few - Company, Zakhm, Khakee, Zameen, Aakrosh, Raajneeti, U Me Or Hum, Atithi Tum Kab Jaoge, Phool AUr Kaante, Suhaag, Ishq, Raju Chacha, Bhoot, Main Aisa Hi Hoon, Halla Bol and Toonpur Ka Superhero. But you can certainly avoid these - Pyar To Hona Hi Tha, Hogi Pyar Ki Jeet, Ye Raaste Hain Pyar Ke, Qayamat, Cash, Ramgopal Verma Ki Aag, Dil To Bachcha Hai Ji and Rascals. Mistakes insaan se hi hoti hai :P
