Originality:

The man who gave “Seena Thana” and “Oh Podu” is really capable of giving some soul stirring melodies like “Enakena Yerkanavae”, “Vaanum Mannum Katti kondathey”, “Nyabagam Varuthey”, “Avaravar Vazhkaiyil”, “Kannukullae Kadhala”, “Ovvoru Pookalumae”. But it all depends what the director wants from him. Still this composer has not reached any heights in Tamil music world except for occasional good melodies. But “Priyasakhi” album could be definitely called as a surprise package. The composer that I am talking about is none other than Bharadwaj. It has got six fresh melodies in it with some genuine stuff though some inspirations peep in occasionally. Director Adhiyaman seems to have extracted some good stuff from him. “Priyasakhi” has Madhavan and Sada in the lead.

Anbu Alaipayuthey

The song starts with a pleasant classical ambience along with piano and synth stuffs. The tune is classical based and very pleasant on first hearing itself. Unni Krishnan is back in form and starts the song softly rendering the first few lines in his own style with strong classical influence. Bharadwaj has used mandolin well as he did in “Enkenna” song. The first interlude solo violin piece is nice while the second interlude has a mix of mandolin, violin, veena, alap and everything to create a divine ambience. Reshmi seems to be Bharadwaj’s favourite who sung “Manasukullae” song in Autograph. She has a good voice but she needs more challenging songs to prove her skills. On the whole, it is a nice song about a happy family with right mix of classical and synth stuff that neither distracts the other.

Chinna Maharani

This is a S.A.Raj kumar type of song with lot of violins accompanying the vocal at the end of each line, the usual tabla and flute. Bharadwaj could have definitely avoided the clichéd string section all through the song. The charanam part of the song strongly sounds like one of the best songs of SAR from Pudhu Vasantham. Hariharan’s voice doesn’t quite fit for this type of song. This is the only passable number in the album.

Kangalinal

This is a peppy soft number with some nice interludes which has various kinds of music put together especially the symphony in the second interlude is too good. The initial rhythm reminds us “Kick yeruthey” song but it stops at that. Haris Ragavendra and Janani sound adequate for this song. Harish seems to have the ability to make any song into a melody by his singing. On the whole an enjoyable track without irritating sounds and heavy beats.

Mudhal Mudhal

This is undoubtedly the best song of the album. It is an easy melody which will linger in your mind for the whole day after first listening. The orchestrations and the chorus are good in the prelude and the interludes. The piano pieces and the chord progressions in the guitar in the background are the other fascinating ingredients of this song. If melody is one that makes you just like this song, Chitra’s voice and her expressive rendition makes you obsessed with it. She is still going strong with her unique voice and by the ease of squeezing expressions out of her voice. There is also male version of the song sung by Uma Maheswaran which is good but not great as Maheswaran made it sound too classical by putting lot of Gamukkas and stretchings, thereby missing the emotions. This has got a strong repeat value.

Priyasakhi

This is again a good melody but a sensuous one and can be called as the second best in the album. Srinivas who is rarely used these days is back giving his best in this songs and accompanying him is the versatile Anuradha Sriram rendering the song with very high expressions. The relief is that though it is a sensuous song, it doesn’t sound vulgar both musically and lyrically. The album comes to a melodic end with this song.

This album is a pretty descent or even good effort from Bharadwaj and the songs are bound to be hit. You can go for it. Rating: 3.5 Stars
