‘Ponniyin Selvan’ is director Radha mohans second directorial venture after ‘Azhagiya theeye’. His first one was greatly welcomed. He had a great style of directing with freshness in approach. His second movie also proves his worth. It implicates that outward beauty is of no importance and, beauty truly lies in the heart of everyone. It gives a boost to everyone. Its shows that his first movie was no flash in the pan, and he definitely is a good prospect for Tamil cinema.
The movie has Ravikrishna as the hero. Revathi as his mother. Gopika as the heroine. Then we also have Prakash raj in a supporting role who gave Radha Mohan the break in his first movie. The movie is about Venu (Ravi krishna) who lives with his Mother Ponniyama ( Revathy). He is very kind hearted and very affectionate with his mom. Their Neighbor Kani(Gopika) is very close to their family and has a liking towards Venu. The whole colony hails Venu for his kind-heartedness and his helping tendency for others. He always gives his helping hands to his jobless friends, and always donates money to the needy people. Ponniyamma is also the sole heart of her colony as everyone comes to her seeking help. All looks fine and smooth, but there is a knot in the plot. Venu has a problem with his face. One side of his face is completely burnt and gives him a severe inferiority complex. He feels miserable when people make fun of his face. He is scared to mingle with others and remains in a very small circle. Guru (Prakash raj) Works along with Venu and are very close to each other. He is one person with whom Venu shares his problems and dreams. Venu always regrets for having such a face and dreams of becoming handsome someday.
One day, while having a petty chat with his friends he suggested of going for a plastic surgery to change his face. A glimmer of hope strikes Venu’s mind. He visits the doctor and finds out that his face can be changed but for a huge cost. After this the story picks up pace as Venu undergoes a total change in character. He gets very obsessed with the idea of undergoing a plastic surgery. He becomes very money minded, very calculative, highly short tempered and impatient. This comes as a shock to everyone including his mom. He looks for part time jobs and slogs for money. He works in the factory and then works as pizza delivery guy as a part time job. There he meets Priya and gets infatuated by her. He tries to impress her without revealing his spoilt face. Due to certain circumstances he works in Onyx as a scavenger too. Does Venu succeed in accomplishing his mission of under going a plastic surgery? does his love succeed ?or does he join hand with Kani? To know these answers visit your theatres and watch the movie.
The movie is a very simple and pleasing one. A very entertaining and a clean family entertainer. The movie has Radha mohans stamp everywhere. The movie moves forward with very realistic scenes with no cinematic elements added. He could have tried avoiding the item song and a single fight sequences, hampering the pace of the movie. The situational comedy is very good in the movie. The characters have neat sense of humor that aptly gels with the mood of the movie. The scenes where ‘Kaduval pathi Mirugam Pathi’ Jagan comes are all note worthy. Ravi krishna gives a good performance though his voice modulation gives you a feeling that still he is in ‘7/G’ hang over. He looks awfully bad in song sequences. He needs to do serious homework on his dancing skills. Revathi gives a good performance though its not very demanding. Gopika is very refreshing and funny as the talkative ‘Kani’. Prakash raj gives a subdued performance to his standards. He could have avoided the exaggerated laugh. All other actors do their roles with ease. Vidaysagars movie is good for the movie with the first two songs already hitting the chart busters.
On the whole the movie is really worth watching. You can have a good time watching it and come out of the movies theatres with a smiling face and light hearted. A simple and convincing effort that has to be appreciated.
