Best movie of dharmendra. Review on Phool Aur Patthar

Phool aur patthar was released way back in 1966, and is said to be dharmendra's best movie and performance, the movie was supersuccess at the box office, although dharmendra did appear in movies before this one, in movies like anpadh,anupama,aa ki parchaiyan, haqeqat,dil bhi tera hum bhi tere all of these movies flopped or did average couldn't make dharmendra into a star. Phool aur patthar was one movies that turned dharmendra into a star. There were lot of good movies released in the 1960's junglee, leader, ram aur shyam, jish desh mein gang behti hai and hum dono, had all great actors like dilip kumar,dev anand, raj kapoor whom I never liked though and shammi kapoor. Dharmendra found his own style between these actors.

Phool aur patthar deals with very realistic story the way it's shown in the movie sounds very realistic, Shakka (dharmendra) who has been a thief all of his life, He works for a big gang, any problem gets out shakka is sent out by his boss to solve the issue. One day shakka is out to rob a house in a village of a rich zamindar played by Jeevan and his wife lalita pawar.

When shaaka reaches the village he meets his old friend I think (is johar) tells shakka that there is some disease in the village and the people are running away, this make shakka's robbery from the house more easier. When shakka reaches the house for the robbery, he hears a woman grasping for water. He finds a young widow Shanti (meena kumari) who is left to die by her in laws (jeevan and lalita pawar) taking pity on her he attends to her and brings her to the city.

Shakka where he lives in the city already has a bad image of being called a ruffian, gunda. Now people thinks he brings women in his house. Shanti who is greatful to shakka for having given her shelter and new lease of life, she is not comfortable with his criminal activities. Eyebrows begin to raise in the apartment buildings where shakka lives, the people wants to know the rishta between shakka and shanti.

One day There is a fire in the apartment buildings and a little child is left in the building alone shakka risking his life saves the child, and becomes a hero for his neighbors now he isn't called a gunda anymore. Shanti on the other side is able to sway shakka away from his life of crime, slowly a mutual attraction comes between them, but shakka's boss who is not going to give up easily he kidnaps shanti and blackmails shakka to do one last job for him.

One main thing about his movie was the music, only two songs were superduper hit, where shashi kala works for the gang as well she tries to seduce dharmendra with asha bhosle's voice singing two songs one was called zindagi mein pyar karna sikhley and sheeshe se pee ya paimaney se pi were great hits.

There was a similar story of this movies made in 1989 called aag ka gola with sunny deol which was flop movies, but sunny deol did quite well playing the role of shaaka in the movie. This was also the first movie where dharmendra takes of his shirt in the movie.

Performancewise, This is dharmendra's best performance Sounds like dharmendra wasnot acting that he was the real shaaka in the movie his dialogue delivery and emotional scenes were perfect. He was also nominated for the best actor award. Meena kumari also does a fine job of playing the role of shanti, she does well in a lot of scenes and tries to match dharmendra every step.
