Unlike what the title of the review suggests, I didn't end up yesterday evening at the Pacific Mall, Ghaziabad, to avail of the 'Loot' sales on offer there. I went to watch 10.20 pm show of 'The Dark Knight' in Adlabs there. I had already seen this movie (my review is there for all to see) & was really impressed by the performance of the Joker. Desirous of watching it in the hall (watched it on pirated dvd, sorry) & buoyed by Bhupesh Rai's praise for IMAX cinemas & their impact on the movie, decided to catch it in the only IMAX cinema - Adlabs (in NCR) Now there was no show listed for last night at Adlabs, Noida. I decided to rush down to the mall that I had heard a lot about & seen it thousands of times from the outside, & watch the movie. The start of the whole process was not auspicious at all. The signs were there but I ignored them all. As Monoo had mentioned in his review of Money hai toh Honey hai - 'Vinaashkale, Viprit Budhhi!'

My darling is not much of a movie buff, but was smitten by the movie & also by my passion for it. She offered to accompany me to the movie. (I wouldn't have gone alone, & so held a long face). This & the fact that we had ordered Pizzas from Domino's were the only things that kept me smiling through the evening, despite what was to follow.

Our friend, the movie buff, was called up, but surprisingly she declined the offer, although she hadn't seen the movie, but wanted to. We should have taken this as the first sign. But...

I called up my mother to fix up the time I was to pick her up from Sahibabad the next day. She didn't want me to come, for the roads were cramped and clogged with the 'Kanwarias' on the route. Another sign, not heeded again.

I was getting an unesy feeling about the trip. Most important hint, still ignored.

We finished the pizzas, got ready & were on our way by 8:50pm. I wanted to keep some spare time: incase there's traffic, movie tickets to be bought, and to roam around the mall. Surprisingly, we made the journey in 40 minutes (almost normal time). As we turned towards the mall from the Anand Vihar Bus Depot side, I noticed 2 things

  1. No tempos, so lots of space on the road - Good

  2. Dark (k)night, no lights in or on the mall - WHAT?

I thought the mall was closed (maybe kanwarias) but drove around to the entrance & was told that there is some power issue but would be resolved soon. I should have turned back then & gone to 11.30pm show at PVR Priya, but no I didn't. I drove into the steeply inclined parking without any lights & 'HELLO" no guards or attendants for help. There were still some cars parked. I took it as a good sign. (WHY?) I parked & we blindly  (mobile light helped) walked to the place which read 'WALK'  in green illumination. We 'walked into a large space with no lights for guidance & no security to speak of.

Some stores were still open with some lights (their own UPS) & there were some people too - about 50-60. Adlabs is on the 2nd floor but we walked up the not so moving escalators and reached the ticket counter 'BOX OFFICE'. The lights were on & we felt pleased to see some attendants manning the counter & the gates. We couldn't buy tickets as the computers were not working. But the movies which had been running were still on. We felt reassured (WHY?) We waited with a small crowd of 10. After 15-20 minutes we decided to go over to the Food Court and roam the mall. The food court was still functioning & there were 20-30 people seated. 4-5 lights were on there.

We went down, had a 'yukkie' Ice Tea (Rs.25 instead of Rs.10 outside) & then came back. No change. I had a 'Black Forest' kulfi. Not bad. But things were getting irritating for there was no news of the situation.

At 10pm we decided to speak to the adminstration of the mall & on being informed that the Control Room was on the ground floor, walked down to it. In between the power came on 2-3 times. But only the emergency lights. The generator was out of order, we were told. There was a small crowd at the Control room but the security guards manning the counter were searching for the complaint's register as this was all that they could do. Register your complaint & someone will get back to you, is what we were told.

What about the power? They didn't know & told us to find the maintenance crew ourselves on the floor below. They could do nothing. There were 5 of them but they refused to go anywhere nor could they find the name or number of the person to contact in case of emergencies.

Some lights came on & stayed on for 4-5 minutes so we thought that all was well now & returned to the ticket counter. No change. Still the same story but with a twist now. Their own UPS had failed now & the movies which had been running, didn't even crawl now. All the people from these shows came out & then slowly left. Remember, all this is happening in total darkness as the lights had again gone off. One could see many mobiles on, for their light.

Again the lights came on & the mall was swathed in brightness, that is except for Adlabs. Now some people had turned up for the 10.20 pm show with tickets & wanted a refund as the show was to be delayed even if the power came back. There was no end in sight and we left dejected but slightly amused by the events.

The parking lot was still dark & so were the surroundings. We paid Rs.15 as parking fee and drove back home. I forgot to mention that the road to the mall and the area around it is invisible because of the deep craters, filled with stinking, dirty water. Thank god I din't walk-in. We reached home by 11:30pm.

I have taken a snap of the Quality Policy of Pacific on display in the mall. I don't know if even the director has read it. **I know why I wasn't delighted - I didn't 'WALK IN', I 'DROVE IN'

In 'light' of the recent terror acts across the country, this comes as a rude shock with no power backup in a soft spot like a mall and with such low intensity & insensitive security. With the power going on & off repeatedly, thankfully no mishaps occurred.

Cons: Power loss, Generator out of order, low security, no administration, no information, no customer care & many more

Pros: My love stuck with me through it all & we kinda enjoyed even this strange turn of events.

Adlabs & its staff deserves a separate review, which will follow.*
