Inspite of being in Bangalore for over 10 months now, I had never been to MTR. I had almost started feeling guilty about not being able to do so. All the great reviews, people talking about it in office and their presence all over the city, finally compelled me to go for lunch at "Mavalli Tiffin Room", near Lalbagh. These people serve vegetarian food only and have been catering to Bangalore's foodies for many decades now. What I could notice was that, they are stilll trying to maintain that old world charm. This may not appeal much to sticklers of service and ambience, but it is worth visiting at least once. I am not sure whether they have a regular a-la-carte restaurant, but I had specifically gone for the thalis they serve, that being touted as one of the best that is available in the city. You take your tokens from the counter, go to the dining hall, get yourself registered with the attendant and wait for your turn. We went on Pongal/Sankrant, and the place wasnt very crowded. As soon as you sit down, you will be served a fruit juice in silver tumblers. The come the thalis and the dishes. This is an eat-as-much-as-you-can place. Poories, sagoo, bisi-bele bhaat, sweet pongal, sambar-rice, payasam, curd rice and icecream were part of the menu that we had. Despite many reviews saying that the waiters literally force you to take second helpings, I found the exact contrary situation. We had to call them everytime we needed anything. Inspite of me being a self-confessed foodie, there was nothing to compel me to overeat. It felt like any other run-of-the-mill restaurants. Surely nothing to prove the innumerable praises heaped on them. Just that the'paan' given in the end, was somewhat good. But surely does not live up to the Rs 110 per head price tag.
