Dates visited: Check-in at Matheran: 24-7-2010 12Noon, Check-out: 25-7-2010 3PM
Total: 10 ppl, gang of friends from Hyderabad. Matheran was nice hill station, with greenery and nature. No vehicular population on the hill impressed us. You can see waterfalls, clouds everywhere. It was perfect getaway to enjoy the nature. Rain coat(Rs. 15/-) and hat(Rs. 20/-) are available at Matheran market. They are very convenient and best.
Here you go:
How to reach: You might have searched and got information about this already. But again in brief:
from HYD to Mumbai by train - Get down at Karjat station. (14 hrs journey)
From Karjat, catch local train towards Mumbai - get down at Neral station (2nd stop from Karjat, 10mins).
Lots of taxis available to Dasturi Naka (starting point of Matheran). Rs.60/- per head fixed. around 6-7kms, will take 20mins.
Take entry ticket at Dasturi Naka (Rs. 25/-) and start walking :). Will take 30-40mins to reach Matheran Market.
Places to visit: There are around 36 points to visit. We didn't have time to visit many.
The best among visited is Louisa point. It's mind-blowing scenic with huge waterfall. Surely will miss it's beauty in non-rainy season.
Others are echo point, mallang point, alexander point, waterfalls (on side of the roads btw neral and dasturi).
Rajan Rane gave us map and list of points to be visited.

Rane saab is excellent, helpful and courteous. He received us at Dasturi point; suggested points to visit with map.
Tried to cover imp points in our 1 day of stay. Food is xcellent and Maharastrian style (cooks non-veg on order).
Charged at Rs.600/- per head per day (including veg meals - 2 lunches, 1 dinner, 1 break fast, 1 tea).
It was a 3BHK house, suitable for a gang of 8-12 ppl. Each room has double cot, attached bathroom and door. So suitable for families.
It was very economical compared to other hotels in Matheran. Only problem is that it's 15-20 mins walk from Market.
Guest House is not in centre of Matheran, ie, Market. It wasn't big problem for us.
Memories to cherish: Matheran in rainy season is excellent. It rained for almost 24hrs in our 26 hrs of stay there :).
Big valleys with waterfalls, walk on hills, dress code for our group (rain coat and hat), and a lotttt.
Stay and food at Vakratunda Guest House is very good.
Things to be noted:
Matheran has so many points to visit. It requires minimum 2nights-3days to enjoy the stay and nature.
No vehicles are available on hill. Only by walk or horses. First, you must enjoy walking.
It rained heavily during our visit. Carry umbrella and plastic covers with you. Cover your luggage bags with plastic covers.
Otherwise by the time you reach Matheran market, your bag and clothes will be drenched.
- Families can stay at Vakratunda Guest House. But it is 20 mins walk from Market.
Single dress worked for us for 2 days stay :).......Surely will plan again for Matheran.
