Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy is on a hatrick. After two successful albums Kal Ho Na Ho and Lakshya their success series continues with ''Kun!Ho Gaya Na'' album. Some may say Lakshya is a bad album but in my opinion, it is as great as Dil Chahtha Hai album. First of all, I admit that this album is just amazing. The trio has lot of potential in them and they have the guts of trying out something different in each and every album. The album has totally 6 tracks and each one is completely different from the other and has something fresh to our ears.
Pyar Mein Jo Uljhane sau
Singers: Shankar Mahadevan, Vijay Prakash, Mahalaxmi, Sneha pant
Orchestration: Zubin balaporia
This song is something bollywood music has never heard before. It comes with an unusual format. It has no any main tune repeating after each stanza, no repeated sound loops in the background, no ordinary singing, no ordinary lyrics etc., The song stands out for its symphonic style of orchestration in the background music. The tune of the song takes different twists and turns at the end of each and every line. The tempo of the song gradually increases and reaches the peak at the end. The final orchestration without any vocals is out of world though similar to the track ''Irish party in third class'' from ''Titanic''. Shankar mahadevan in his usual style shouts. Mahalaxmi's voice is soothing. But, A.R.Rahman has done this 6 years before in ''Strawberry'' song from ''Minsara kanavu''. Though it seems to be inspired, it is a great attempt and has they have tried hard to make sound different from its inspiration.
No No
Singers: Kunal, Shankar Mahadevan, Dominique, Loy, Chetan Sashital
A trance number with heavy dosage of techno stuff. All these days in Hindi remix and in many Hindi songs we heard English raps in between, but here they have tried rap in Hindi. A good effort. The beats when slowed will become the background beats of ''Main aisa kyun hoon'' song. But when a techno tabla sound adds to this usual beat sounds different and good. ''Yeah Yeah'' chorus at the end of each stanza sounds good. I could not separate a single voice in this song as the chorus part dominates but Kunal and Dominique are good. This song is also seems to be inspires from ARR's ''No Problem'' song. Anyway an enjoyable song but forgettable.
Aao Naa
Singers: Udit Narayanan, Sadhana Sargam
Excellent melody and this song is my pick of the album. These guys always use piano, violins, guitar well for melodies and have done it again in this song. The main element that grabs out attention immediately is ''Ge Ge Re'' swaram by male and female together. It is just great to listen to karnatic swarams in Hindi music. Somehow, the overall composition of the song sounds similar to ''Kal ho naa ho'' title track, in the sense the flow and the way the tune reaches to the final chant “Aoo Naa” is much similar to that of KHNH title track. It is nice to hear Sadhana sargam in such melodies. She mesmerised me with her voice again after ''kitni baatein'' from Lakshya. No need to mention about Udit, he scores. But why he didn't sing the swaram part and it is sung by shankar himself I think.
Main hoon
Singers: Shaan, Sunidhi Chauhan
Yet another experimental stuff and fusion. The song is a techno bhangra. The song starts immediately and in a much usual way and it goes high when the bhangara beats starts with ''Main hoon bas main hoon koi doosra nahin'' chant. You just can't stop dancing. Both the singers have done their job well. The main keyboard loop that repeatedly sounds in the background is good. The final fusion of techno beats with bhangra percussion is great. Just keep on shaking your body while listening to this song.
Baat Samkha Karo
Singers: Chetan Sashital, Shankar Mahadevan, Javed ali
I think Chetan is the perfect backing vocal for Amitabh. It sounds like a dhandia song. It is the only fair song in this album. The trumpets are used well all through the song. It is a group song and one can expect a grand visual with some 100 people dancing inside a grand set. This song will grow after more listening and that too not for its music but may be for its https://lyrics. It seems Amitabh and Vivek are in conversation. As I don't understand Hindi much I could not appreciate this song. If you know Hindi you may like it but nothing much to say about the music.
Dheere Dheere
Singers: Shankar Mahadevan
Yet another haunting melody in this album. The background music has minimal usage of instruments. It has a soulful tune. The way the word ''Dheere'' stretched is too good. Why Sankar? The song would have been better if shankar's voice is replaced by Sonu nigam/Hariharan. But shankar's voice adds strength when high pitch line comes in the middle. Again the best usage of violins, guitar and piano. In the middle track shifts to orchestrational piece of ''Aao naa'' song. A great melody all the way and second best in this album. The song is too slow but listen to it alone when you are in a romantic mood.
If anyone know the mail-id of this music director please forward this mail containing some observations about their music.
Hi SEL,
First of all, Congrats on a Hatrick. I wanted to share some of my thoughts about your music and that is the purpose of this mail. Your songs are highly rahmanish and I don't say it is wrong until you stay within the limit. I observe that you guys take utmost care to stay within the limit. Your melodies though has haunting fresh tunes and nice singing part, it is becoming monotonous. You always use either of these instruments piano, flute, violin, guitar with soft beats for all your melodies and that too in the same way. That is why most of your melodies sound similar at some places. And Shankar can restrict his singing in his won composition; he seems to dominate all the songs. And as one among the trio is a guitarist there is a strong usage of guitar in all the songs and that also can be avoided. Otherwise I think your guys are the best in bollywood right now and you have created a great expectation among the music lovers. Keep up your hard work and deliver some fresh path breaking songs to bollywood.
Best of luck.
Yours Musically,
SureshKumar
