?Kaadhal? album is one of the albums in my highly expected list since I heard about this movie, music and its crew. My expectations were sky high because of 3 factors
~~ The movie is directed by Balaji Sakthivel who previously directed ?Samurai? in which he extracted some of the best tunes from Harris and so I thought he is capable of extracting the best from any musician like his guru Shankar.
~~ Joshua Sridhar who was a co-worker of A.R.Rahman (Has done additional programming for many of ARR numbers, recent one being for Boys) debuts as a composer through this album and obviously when a talent emerges out of A.R.Rahman we expect quality music from them. Also everyone puts their maximum effort and comes with their best in debut.
~~ Movie is produced by the well known directorShankar who is known for his perfection in anything and everything.
Straight of the bat, I admit what ?Minnalae? album did for Harris Jeyaraj will ?Kaadhal? album do for Joshua Sridhar. I think the previous line made everything clear. Yes, the album is excellent considering it as composer?s debut album. Though all the songs have a Rahman feel, they are refreshing and different in content. The album is packed with romantic, joyous and youthful numbers. Each and every song has a different format and there is no any usual run-off-mill stuff in any of the songs.
There are totally 8 tracks and all the songs are written by Na. Muthu kumar. In recent times, it is hard to find a single lyricist writing all the songs in a film but Na. Muthu kumar is an exception who excels in penning meaningful https://lyrics. Though all the songs have usual love, separation, youth stuff he manages well by his play with words and makes it sound fresh. He is evolving as next Vairamuthu in Tamil cinema. Most of the songs are written in Madurai Tamil slang.
As the story of movie is village based and also lyrics being written in slang words, don?t think that the songs are soft IRish folk numbers with traditional instruments and if you think so you are bound to be on a surprise because it has an entirely different (western) flavor.
Poovum Pudikithu
Karthik, Shalini singh
The song starts with high tempo MJ beats along with Karthik singing energetically in fore. It is quite different to listen to Tamil slang words with heavy techno beats in the background. Then the song takes a shift to a melodious female humming without any background beats. Shalini?s humming is simply superb and high in melody. The song returns to Karthik after Shalini renders some melodious lines. With this unconventional song, album starts promisingly.
Ivanthana
Sunitha Sarathy
This song belongs to Rack genre with heavy use of electric and bass guitars along with catchy keyboard rhythms. It is a short and sweet song with cute https://lyrics. I just don?t like Sunitha?s diction; Shalini should have sung this song too.
Thandatti Karupaiyee
Shalini Singh, Vidya, Malar, Malaiamma
It is traditional Tamil folk song called ?Nattupura pattu? sung when a village girl attains age. The song starts with Malaiamma singing a traditional folk song with her rustic vocals without any background music. Then Vidya and Malar together takes over and sings free flowing verses written well by Muthu in high tempo with heavy beats and orchestration in the background. Composer has used some new sounds and strings which altogether gives a different sound to the song.
The feet tapping folk beats produced by traditional percussions along with drums in the interludes are sure to make front benchers dance in the theatres. It is a very situational but likeable number. The beauty of simple lyrics is the major plus of the song. Even this song makes a sudden shift to melodious lines of Shalini which we already heard in the first song. As the tune is good, it is not boring to listen it again and it gels well with the situation of this song too.
Thottu Thottu
Haricharan, Harini
It is an excellent romantic number well sung by Haricharan and Harini. The tune is too good with catchy beats. The song reaches a higher plane when it shifts to a soulful melody after first few lines. Subtle usage of Piano and bass guitar in the background elevates the melody. Both the interludes are great with fine usage of flute, Veena and violins in the first and some synthesized rhythms with Sarangi and tabla in the second.
The lyrics are romantic especially I like the line ?Uzhagathil ulla Chitravadhaikellam chella peyar vaithal ?Kaadhal? sung by Harini.
Pura Koondu
Suresh Peters, Tipu, Harish Ragavendra, Premji, Karunas
This is an ultimate funny song. The down to earth words in the lyrics about the bachelor?s life in Triplicane mansions are the major plus for the song. The song takes lot of twists and turns in tune, tempo and rhythm. You have every form of music like western, classical, gana, folk in this song. It is purely situational number and definitely with the visuals the song will bring the house down. The funniest part is the remix of ?Vicco turmeric? jingle. All the singers have contributed well though Tipu and Harish dominates the major portion of the song.
Kiru Kiru
Karthik, Shalini Singh
It is again a village soft romantic folk number packed with all western stuff in the background. Composer has layered lot of new sounds, strings and rhythms one over the other like an ARR number. The usage of traditional instrument Urumimelam in fusion gives a different sound to the song. Karthik has done a great job in singing each line with right expressions. Shalini has nothing much to do except repeating the words in a husky voice in which Karthik ends and again the format of this duet is something that we have never heard before.
Unakenna Irupaen
Haricharan
This is the best song of the album. It is slow soft pathos packed romantic melody. The wind woods give a promising and soothing lead to the song. Haricharan has put his heart and soul in this song and comes up with an expressive rendition. The interludes are brilliant with apt usage of flute and solo violins which are must ingredients of such songs. The background rhythm is catchy with subtle usage of percussions and synthesizers. The lyrics do its magic again. Especially I like these lines
?Vizhi moodum podhum unnai
piriyamal naan iruppaen --
Kanavukkul kaval Irupaem?
Kaadhal..
Haricharan
This is the next best song of the album. It is an instrumental track with neat orchestrations. Starts like a symphony music with grand orchestration with violins and flute playing romantic notes and then slowly moves to a captivating rhythm. The chorus chant ?Kaadhal? is aptly responded with ?Tha na naa na? chant by Haricharan. It has a striking, melodious and a youthful tune. Guitar is put to maximum usage. The track ends with flute playing flourishing notes seamlessly. Listen to believe the beauty of this song.
Congrats Joshua, you have done it. Then, what you guys are waiting for. Go and grab your copy of the album immediately. Of course you won?t regret buying it.
