Being an ardent ARR fan, I have never missed any of his albums except Daud and Zubeidaa. I have been thinking for a long time to buy these albums, but somehow I couldn?t get it. But finally, last week when I went to music world to buy ?Kyun! Ho gaya na? album, they asked me to pick one more CD of tips for free. So, I chose to pick ?Daud? album. Only when I got the CD in my hand I came to know that this is a Ram Gopal Varma?s film and my expectation grew more. But will it be another ?Rangeela?.
To be frank, this album amazed me more than Kyun Ho gaya na album. There are two reasons for that
1) Unconventional Singers and Singing
2) Tamil flavor.
Daud - Remo Fernandes
Zahreela ? Asha Bhonsle, Leena Chandra, Das
Shabba Shabba ? Sonu Nigam, Ranu Mukharjee, Neeraj vohra
Thump of Daud
Ye jan - Kavitha Krishnamoorthy, Vinod Rathod
Oh Bhavrae - Asha Bhonsle, Yesudas
Daud ? Usha Uthup
Oh! Sai Yaiye ? Asha Bhonsle, S.P.B
Unconventional Singers and Singing
Except Asha Bhonsle, Kavitha and Sonu nigam others singers SPB, Yesudas, Viond Rathod, Usha Uthup, Ranu Mukharjee rarely sings in Hindi. But it is a different experience when such rare vocals are used.
The songs #2, #6 and #8 are the proof of Asha Bhonsle?s extent of versatility that she can exhibit in singing. All the three songs have her domination over the other aspects. Each of the three belongs to different genre and she effortlessly shines in all kind of songs. #2 is the most haunting one and it is one of the most unconventional singing ever.
The pitch range in which she sings thrills you and perfectly emotes the mood of the song. #8 has is a funny song it seems and it has a completely different singing and sounds like a kids voice. It is like the way she sung ?Rangeela re? song. #6 has a more matured girl kinda voice and it sounds normal without any deliberate modulations and shift in pitch. She is the winner all the way in this album.
Song #1 and #7 are male and female versions of the same song. I prefer the female version sung Usha Uthup. Her raw voice has something fresh to deliver. The way she blabbers in the starting and the way she makes the song more racy by her youthful singing make one excited. Actually she has improvised herself at many places. Remo is also good but comparatively Usha wins.
I would say bollywood is still missing a legendary singer called SPB. He is a singer who can sing songs of all kind and in any language. As far as I know, his Hindi pronunciation is flawless. ARR is the only man who uses him rarely and appropriately in Hindi. He has done a good job in #8. The way he sings in the first interlude of #8 is funny but just try it out and you will realize how difficult it is to sing like that. It was so refreshing to hear his vocal chord vibrating in Hindi.
Here is one more south Indian singer called Yesudas. He is not a versatile singer but he is the true king of melodies. His soothing voice elevates the song. In #6 he has delivered his usual stuff but unusually in Hindi this time.
A perfect competitor for Asha in this song but yet he scores over. Kavitha Krishnamoorthy is great yet again in #5. She effortlessly fuses classical gamukkas ans swarams to the songs she sing and it is awesome. Her voice is solid enough to stick in our minds immediately.
Among the new singers, Vinod Rathod in #5 and Das in #2 are promising. Ranu Mukharjee also has a unique voice. She could have been utilized more in Hindi film music.
About the Music
All the song sounds like a Tamil song and may that is the reason why this album was not received well. The singers that ARR chosen enhances the feel even more.
#1 #7 The loop of folk beats that repeats all through the song is foot tapping.
#2 The chorus, orchestration and a unique singing delivers the thrilling mood completely. Really I was so scared when I heard it for the first time that to alone in a room at 23.00 hrs.
#3 Even though I don?t understand the lyrics properly, it sounds like they are singing after boozing (is that right). Usage of flute along with the vocals is excellent. The string usage is similar to that of Dilsere song. Violin pieces are also good. The tune is purely classical though it sounds western and that is the magic of ARR.
#4 The track called ?Thump of Daud?. The beats are like that of Principle of Lust from Eminem. It has some sounds coming in and going out and some techno stuff similar to that we heard in Chandralekha song. The track picks up only when it ends when a keyboard starts playing a nice tune. A forgettable instrumental from ARR.
#5 Another thrilling song with good orchestration. The song perfectly sounds the feel.
#6 Usage of flute and veena in the interludes is simply great and I feel the basic rhythm are similar to that of Mustafa song. Percussion is used minimally and at right places.
#8 The percussion arrangements are good. ?Sai! Yai ye? chant is cool. The part of the song that plays the tune in keyboard sounds good. An enjoyable song all the way.
It is more an experimental, enjoyable and a laudable effort yet again from Varma + ARR combo with a disappointing instrumental.
