Many times we take the blessings of life we possess for granted and grumble on not having a larger chunk of the dazzling pie. How many of us remind ourselves that we are blessed as we can go to one place to another place on our own feet and not on a wheelchair or have the ability to express ourselves by taking and listening to others. Most of the times we are jaleous of others and curse our lucks and do not even bother to learn the art of living happily.
The main protagonist of Anurag Basu's masterpiece 'Barfi' , Ranbir 'Barfi' aka 'Murphy' Kapoor shows us how to live life in its true sense inspite of having real problems like being deaf and mute( no he is not bothered by the fact that whether his neighbor's house is bigger than his). After playing a model in the critically acclaimed 'Fashion ' to the femme fatale in 'Saat Khon Maaf ' Priyanka Chopra gives another stratling performance as the autistic Jhilmil in 'Barfi'.
Barfi is the talk of the town in the mountain cladded city of Darjeeling and though he is deaf and mute he is the true hero of the town. Being a prankstar he is always ready with a prank up his sleeve. The film ' Barfi' really teaches us to celebrate life as it depicts the personal jounrney of Barfi and his love affair with two women, the classy Shruti(Ileana DCruz) at first and then with a autistic girl Jhilmil(Priyanka Chopra).
Like Ranbir and Piggy Chops the Southern sensation Ileana DCruz making her debut in Hindi films also deserves a big round of applause as she portrays her character with great ease. Special mention should be mention of Saurabh Shukla as the police officer. He redefines comedy in Hindi cinema.
Barfi is a romantic comedy and does not have any action sequences or the normal masala movie ingredients like song and dance (two of the three main characters cannot speak) but it deals with a subject hitherto untouched in Hindi films. Anurag Basu must be accoladed for making such a wonderful movie.
Pritam continues his successful musical journey in Bollywood and the songs are all good. Special mention must be made of the cinematography by Ravi Burman as his work aling with the natural beauty of the Himalayas creates a altogether different ambience. Supporting actors like Ashish Vidyarthi , Roopa Ganguly , Jishu Sengupta , Akash Khurana and Haradhan Bandhopadhya have given memorable perfornmances.
Barfi is the story of selfless love and finding solace in the little pleasures of life. It shows that having a physical or mental disability can't be a obstacle in leading life greatly. The only flaw that can be said about Barfi is that the first half could have been a little less elaborative. However, all said and done Barfi is a fresh attempt and truly 'hatke' attempt in the otherwise formula clad Bollywood cinema. Anurag Basu really deserves a lot of kudos for it.
