The story of KK Nagar. Review on 7G Rainbow Colony Movie

Title:

When catchy words are considered for titles to draw young cine-going crowd to the theaters, it is a bold decision to go ahead with a title like ''7/G Rainbow colony''. When Selvaragavan decided the title and informed the producer, AMRatnam, he was hesitant but Selvaragavan insisted to have it. Well, the title sure is a very different one and after seeing the film, I feel the title is apt and justified.

Story outline:

The director said in one of his interviews that there are about 80% of people who are average performers in real life. They go under immense pressure forced by the society and elders while they are in schools/colleges. Constant comparison of their studies with other kids by their parents is a big let down and makes them think that they are useless.

Kathir is one of those guys and a person who really does not know what to do with his life. His carefree life style and the treatment he gets from his father make him belittle. And Anitha comes to his colony and as a neighbour. Her family was a wealthy family and due to financial problems, they shift to 7G. She aims at higher things in life, exact opposite to Kathir. Kathir falls in love with her. He goes after her again and again, and has placed her very high in his heart. She accepts him after long time. Her acceptance changes his behaviour. She finds his talent and helps him to land a job.

Amid this Anitha's marriage is at stake and her parents give their words to one of their relatives who helps them to get out of financial problems. Anita's mom finds out that Kathir and Anitha are in love. They move out of the colony and ask Kathir to stay out of Anitha. What happens after it leads to the climax of the film that spans almost for 30 mins.

Cast Performance:

Ravi Krishna is a son of the producer and a new comer. He has done a good job as Kathir, other established stars would not have done a better job than him. But will other characters in Tamil film world suit him is a big question. Sonia agarwal has acted excellent as a Northie girl living in Madras. She expresses her dislikes of Kathir with ease and her facial expressions are commendable. The third and jovial character is Lakshmi (I don't know his real name), a friend of Kathir. He gives the needed lighter parts for the whole movie. Other supporting casts have also done their jobs especially Vijayan.

Screenplay and Dialogues:

These are two of the important aspects handled very well by Selvaragavan. He is basically interested in writing and we can sense that in this film?s screenplay and dialogues. The screenplay just goes around with these three main characters without getting into boredom. His witty, spontaneous, natural-like dialogues keep the mood of the film very enjoyable.

Memorable scenes:

There are so many in this film. I like to mention three of them here.

First: after finding the job, his father does not show any appreciation to him in person. He scolds him just like he had done it in the past. But after Kathir goes to bed, he tells his wife that he is very proud of Kathir. Kathir happens to listen to the conversation and for the first time he realises his father's true feelings. In the next morning his father gets milk from the milk booth which Kathir used to do when he was jobless. Kathir shows his respect to his father and this sudden change brings uneasiness to their relationship, not even a single word spoken by either, everything was just visual.

Second: In 'Ninaiththu Ninaiththu' song, Karthir waits outside Anitha's house.... picks up the mat and pillow from the trash can and runs away with them. You can just feel how mad he is about Anitha.

Third: The dialogue he speaks to the cop in the hospital and Anitha's mom's blessing to Kathir.

Background Score:

Background score plays a very important role when visual media like cinema properly used. It is hard to imagine watching movies portraying psychological side of human beings without proper score. Instead of uttering hundreds of words, a few words with good piece of music will deliver the needed emotional thing to the viewers. Yuvan Shankar Raja and Selvaragavan have understood it perfectly. And Yuvan Shankar Raja has done it again after his stupendous score in Kathal Kondein. I wanted to keep track of good pieces coming in the movie but there are so many. I bought the OST of KK when it got released and I hope they release the OST of 7G soon.. Grab your copy if you like OSTs, the album will be a treat for sure.

Songs:

The songs are chartbusters and in the audio circle for several months now. In the film, the shreya version of 'Ninaiththu Ninaithuthu' was left out. Also the instrumental piece 'Music of Joy? was not there. The biggest let down was the item number that was inserted unnecessarily at that stage of the story. (I had big arguments with my friends about this. Some felt that the song was necessary for the conversation coming after the song. They said that if the song was not there, the director had to rush to that conversation part immediately. He needs some space to get there was their point. Well, I beg to differ) All other songs are good, especially in ?Kan Pesum? there is this effect (I don't know the technical term, PCSriram also used it in Vanam Vasapadum) used when Kathir dances with his friends.

The best song is KK?s version of ?Ninaiththu Ninaiththu?. When it comes in the movie, the crowd was just stunned and there was this pin drop silence in the whole theatre, best song for this kind of situation. There is a bit song coming in the middle of the movie which was not in the audio cassette. I did not like the voice that much, but interludes are fantastic. Lastly Selvaragavan still needs some sophistication when comes to picturing group dances.

Cinematography:

The cinematography is done in such a way that the audience feel they are very to close to the characters and makes them feel that they are part of the story, a nice attempt by Aravind.

Verdict:

We can summarise the whole movie in just one line. ?muthal kanavu mudinthidum munname thookkam kalainthathe?.Overall 7GRC is a well crafted movie by Selavaragavan. If you enjoy Autograph and Pithamagan type of movies, then this film is a MUST for you. Go get your tickets, it is worth.
