Story of madness. Review on 1947 - Earth

Do you remember the time when two newly formed nations became mad, when killing, loot, massmurder, and castrophe became the passion of people and rape became the favorite sport of the people. Revisit the holocaust of partition through the eyes of a nine-year-old handicapped Persian girl

1947 Earth is the story about madness of people that has been taken from Bapsi Sidwas”s best selling novel Ice candy man. Deepa Mehta has taken some cinematic liberties in the main story. The main protagonists are three: Ice candy man Dilnawaz (Aamir khan), Message wala Hasan (Rahul Khanna) and Shanta Bi as Ayah (Nandita das). It is a love triangle where partition is in the background. The story is set in the urban Lahore where Nandita das works as a maid in a Parsi family. Her main work is to take care the nine-year-old handicapped girl.

The country is dividing, the relations between the communities are changing, and friend turning foes and people are migrating from Pakistan to India and vice versa. Both the Ice candy man and Message wala has love Interest in Nandita. Nandita prefers the Message man and then the story of hate betrayals starts. How the anger of rejection in love turns a man to hatred the whole community. Aamir khan has given wonderful performance as a person who after rejected in love starts hating the whole community and supports mass murders. In one scene he says to Nandita Das by pointing a finger to his heart “ Shanta Bi yahan aag jal rahi hai”.

The filmis very dark, scene of holocaust, and trauma of migrating people would give you shivering and chill. Even with such an impressive star cast and finest story line film is not without flaws. First the film was totally shot in old Delhi area, which does not look like the Lahore. Second Director seemed to be confused that what she should be focused upon, on love triangle or holocaust. Third in whole of the movie viewer does not understand that why do the parents of 9 year old handicap girl let herroam with the maid in the burning city. The lovemaking scene between Nandita and Rahul Khanna seems forced and was unnecessary.

Finally A.R Rahman music is terrific, he was in best form and Javed Akhtar” s lyrics fully justified the pain and agony of the era. Songs like , Ishwar allah tere jahan mein Nafrat kyun hain jang hai kyun , Yhe joh jindgi hai koi dastan hai kahan jayegi yeh khabar khan hai and light song Banno rani tumeh sayani hona hi tha. All are wonderful songs.

So as an average this is dark but different movie to watch
