The teasers made me be little optimistic about this movie but this Sharman Joshi's 1920 London is like most of the Bollywood movies; very predictable and hence boring. Clichéd dialogues, lingering love angle and romantic songs(in a horror movie, right). what it lacks is the HORROR. Come on that’s one thing that was most expected.
If this wasn’t filling the cup, there are actors who look blank throughout the film and barely able to hold any attention. Thank God, at least Sharman Joshi did a decent job compared to his co-stars Meera Chopra and Vishal Karwal. Also, 1920 London is almost on similar sails like the first installment in the franchise. Just the vice-versa of what we saw in the earlier movie, this time the wife saves the beloved husband. So even story wise, director Tinu Desai has nothing new to offer.
The interesting twists in first half is not enough for making me warm my seat anymore. I have been tossing in boredom and lack of horror just made it bad. Top of it, this horror movie has romantic songs. I needed some crisp ghostly or witchy sounds but ended up getting dreamy music.
Coming back to story, Shivangi(Meera Chopra) and Veer(Vishal Karwal) are happy couple married and settled in London. Things are lovery-dovey until a necklace arrives from Rajasthan, after which Veer falls ill and Shivangi believes he is possessed by an evil spirit. She goes back to her hometown to find an exorcist, who can help save her husband. That's when Jai(Sharman Joshi) comes into the picture who is none other than Shivangi's ex-love(so predictable twist) and the only one who can save Veer. By now, being a Bollywood flick, everything had become clear as to what’s going to happen next. With exorcism comes black magic, tantric-ness and gangaajal as part and parcel. How else can the evil spirit be driven away!
1920 London has nowhere-to-go story and hardly spooky, kind of had frowny face rather than scaredy cat look. Makers should have thought about the story and screenplay; logical execution was needed. No wonder, horror movies aren’t big genre in India yet.
Meera Chopra has much to do regards her acting because she could not even make her face express correct emotions. Whereas Vishal Karwal is considered, thank God he had less screen time. Sharman Joshi is a terrific actor, we have seen him do versatile characters but his experimenting with scripts ain’t working for him. But it was only because of Sharman I could survive the movie. Phew!
All in all, let’s not waste some crunchy time on this flick, better rent a different horror movie to spook yourself out.
