Interpreter Of Maladies - Jhumpa Lahiri
Nov 09, 2022 07:34 PM387 Views

I don't think I've ever enjoyed a series of short stories as much as this book. They all come from a Desi background, but all of them intrigued me. Starting with the cover story, I found myself particularly hooked. Listening to each story, I could imagine being in that environment. Every message was effortless and sensitive. It's rare to find so many stories in one book, but now I understand why this book and its author are so admired. I have to comment on the narrator. She was very good at pronouncing most Hindi words. Her accent and phrasing also fit the theme of the story. Overall I highly recommend this.

Worth the money

Any immigrant who loves to read should pick up this book.it is a lovely set of stories on lives of people who may reside overseas, or visit their homeland.most heart warming is that last story in the set, which is about a newly married couple and their initial days in new city in USA.like many other Jhumpa's stories this story also has many twists.

She plays well with her characters and seems to always leave the reader desiring for more in each individual story. She showed the contradictions in human behaviour of most immigrants.in whole a 4.2/5 rating to this story book.

Everybody need an interpreter
Feb 13, 2019 11:32 PM1593 Views

Everybody need an interpreter. This is a main idea of Jhumpa Lahiri in her short story "Interpreter of maladies". Why so enigmatic title is? Born in London and raised in Rhode Island by her Bengali parents, Jhumpa Lahiri(born in 1967) visited Calkutta as a child and recognized the importance of both Indian and American cultures in her future life. This experience is reflected in her short story "interpreter of maladies" and other works. She is critical of the superficial adoptation of either culture, and readily admits that she feels neither Indian nor American.Running of events you can see through the lens of Indian interpreter. He, Mr Kapasi, as a tour guide drives the Das family from the USA to the Sun Temple in India. The family is ethnic Indians, born in America. Through his perspective Mr and Mrs Das aren't so close nor really taking care of their three children. While visiting the Sun Temple, Mrs Das should ask Kapasi to interpret her common trivial little secret about the son Bobby. Her romantic interest to Kapasi as an interpreter from Gujarati of patients for the Indian doctor permits her to do it. In contrast the dreams of Capasi to understand and to love Mrs Das break. They disappear like the sheet of paper with his address fluttered away in the wind. Soft pictures of interesting criss-cross lines of different personages are meaningful for this short story. The attempt to come back to the native culture and misunderstanding, especially, the scene with monkeys, show reality of some dreams.

Jhumpa lahiri's best book
Nov 25, 2017 12:03 PM1496 Views (via Mobile)

Hi friends,

Interpreter of maladies is the only book I have read of jhumpa lahiri as for some reason.I do have read the book by the same author but havnt been able to read them as yet.I wish to do that again.I really proud to say that I have read this book twice and this remains her best work.I really impressed by this book.It will be difficult to explain what this book is and I try explain it about in few brief sentence let me try .

The whole book is made of several short stories which seems to be disconnected at first but hold the common treads of human life and emotions. All the stories of this book are about BROKEN MARRIAGE, LOSS OF A CHILD, NEGLECTION OF OLD PEOPLE, EXTRA MARITAL AFFAIRS, DILEMMAS OF A MARRIAGE.While each story starts with a new and fresh characters and common emotions hold true and forces us to think about similar dilemmas in our own life.It is not a easy book to read.It is not that jhumpa uses difficult words but the way she makes the characters converse has a heavy tone which I find overbearing sometime.

The good thing there is always have a hope in the end of every story which propels the human race forward and make us to close the book with a smile in our heart.moreover the book can also be taken as a study of roots, all of us are searching for our identities.Almost all the short stories signify some sort of travel whether it be of a character inside his or her life beyond countries and in some sense of all the characters are broken with some burden.you will definitely love it when you goes through the story lines of this book.

This stories is not easy stories to write. A novel is an easier literary from in a way it allows us the space for character and plot development and gives us the space to slowly fall in love with it. This happened with interpreter of Maldies a perferctly titled collection of short stories about Indian American in india or in the U.S. I really enjoyed this collection.

My favourite was the title story about a part time taxi driving talking a American faimily.

Stories of scattered identity and individuality...
May 15, 2017 12:45 PM3687 Views

This book is a collection of nine different short stories. Jhumpa Lahiri is a diasporic writer and it seems that she has poured her heart while writing this collection of short stories. I have read this book several times and stories like "A Real Durwan", " A Temporary Matter", "Sexy", are very appealing in nature. The character of Boori Ma in the story "A Real Durwan" is very heart touching. once she is liked as a Durwan by everybody in the locality but later she is turned out from her job. it seems there is no any space left for her on this heart. she had also a very glorified past but she is hardly believed by anyone. it shows that life keeps on changing. the residents of the locality throw out Boori Ma with her belongings and they start searching another durwan for the locality. In the story "Sexy" we come across Miranda who is a white woman who loves an Indian man Dev. it is very interesting that dev is a married man who has an affinity for Miranda. This story gives us a glimpse of unbalansed human relationships. Sexy is a derogatory term which has been used in the story. This book raises some serious issues of the society. for readers purchasing this book will not be a money waste.

The book contains nine stories of Indian immigrants which are undoubtedly universal in nature but are taken as native by the readers. Lahiri's characters are all defective but what changes them to be good is their humanity. We need to understand them as sometimes we also behave like them. This collection reveals a great of human experiences that implies to our routine involvements in out daily routine. The book reveals how to use structural aspect of the language in such a simple and vivid expertise.

Nice book

This bok is one of the best short story bok I have perused recently, the stories depend on Indian Americans and written in an extremely clear manner.reader can feel the character depicted and I felt the delight and the distress of the general population portrayed, Jhumpa Lahiri is certainly going be in the alliance of awesome story teller of the millenium. The stories fundamentally spin around the characters and Jhumpa can depict the human emotions in few words, all the nine stories are amazing and I preferred most yet one may contrast with me since all stories are of high class.Jhumpa Neelanjana Lahiri's treasury of short stories incorporates a couple distributed in the New Yorker magazine. The stories are about life. From conformity between not well balanced couples to grandiosity, all is covered. It is to be noticed that almost all stories are told from the perspective of a youthful woman. All life's issues are managed with.My most loved is the last story, where a woman who has carried on a hundred years is in wonderment of the world. There are no sudden wanders aimlessly here.Yet there is space for some exceptionally ordinary container indian and dish world circumstances here.

Jhumpa Lahiri is my all time favourite writers. She always hit the pain of the normal society and she has the ability to reach the targeted views of the people. Jhumpa's stories explore the spiritual fissures opened up bu the cultural dissonance of our modern age and this is the best part of the story writer to enable in their creation. The ultimate value of these stories is that they offer a subtle critique of globalisation that can not be underestimated.

This book won the Pulitzer Prize for good reason: it's meaningful, engaging, and original. East meets West, Hindi meets Christianity, old meets young, and genders collide and unite. Tradition and culture are strange and beautiful. Absolutely lovely prose.

So good

Poor story line.
Oct 10, 2016 09:54 AM4709 Views (via Mobile)

At the end of the day, an extremely discouraging storyline from yet another creator of Indian beginning. Keep in mind! I am not being parochial here, I am Indian myself. Being extremely acquainted with Indian cinematography and screenplays, I realize that Indians are inclined to over stressing on family notions and feelings. However, what I neglect to comprehend is the manner by which creators based out of different nations too have the same thought of applying conclusions in an extremely negative sense to their stories. It likewise beats me how this won the Pulitzer award. I jsut read it only for the sake of knowing how the author would end it. This is one among the books I read with worst story line.

One of Jhumpa Lahiri's best works
Aug 30, 2016 05:02 PM4888 Views

Interpreter of Maladies is the only book I have read of Jhumpa Lahiri as for some reason or other, I do have other books by the same author but haven't been able to read them as yet. Well, I wish to do that soon. As of now, I am proud to say that I have read this twice and this remains her best work, as attested by my hubby and daughter too!

It will be difficult to explain what this book is about in few brief sentences but let me try. The whole book is made up of several short stories which seem to be disconnected at first but hold the common threads of human life and emotions. All the stories are about issues such as broken marriage, loss of a child, care of a child, neglect of old people, extra marital affairs, dilemmas of a marriage. While each short story starts afresh with new characters, the common emotions hold true and force us to think about similar dilemmas in our own life. I think that is why this won the Pulitzer Prize as it becomes a very personal book.

It is also not an easy book to read. I love reading fun stories like Harry Potter and started reading it on the recommendation of my daughter and found it very heavy in the beginning. It is not that Jhumpa uses difficult words, but the way she makes the characters converse has a heavy tone which I find overbearing sometimes. The good thing is there is almost always hope in the end of every story which propels the human race forward and makes us close the book with a smile in our heart.

Moreover the book can also be taken as a study of roots, all of us are searching for our identities and what happens when those identities are broken? Almost all the short stories signify some sort of travel whether it be of a character inside his or her life or beyond countries and in some sense all the characters are broken with some burden. This book thus needs a careful personal introspection and is not light reading. But once read, it is not easy to stop thinking about it either!

Jhumpi Lahiri is really HEART TOUCHING

I am reading a short stories collection after a really long time This book actually needs no recommendation because it has already won a Pulitzer Prize that speaks for itself.

In the book the social behavior of American society has been beautifully presented here.

dealing with the emotional conundrum of cultural values. “Stories of Boston, Bengal and beyond “the maiden book of Jhumpa lahiri, winner of the most coveted Pulitzer Prize has a lot more life to it.

We are in the age of globalization, most people think that having dual identities( passport, fluency in 2 languages or more) is an asset, and many of Bollywood films suggest that living in USA, UK or Australia is real fun. We are in the age of globalization, most people think that having dual identities( passport, fluency in 2 languages or more) is an asset, and many of Bollywood films suggest that living in USA, UK or Australia is real fun.

The narration, the style of writing, the little detailed descriptions, the characterisations, everything is way too perfect.

I would not want to go into details of the stories as they have to be read to get the essence and the beauty of them. Just me telling you the synopsis of each short story and rating them as good or bad,

Its almost as if its a movie unfoloding in front of your eyes. The set appears. the characters are already in motion and you get a walkthrough them like the invisible man. Jhumpa Lahiri manages to ignite longdead emotions in ones soul. Feeling of pain. Separation. Longing. were never so realisitically painted as on her canvas.

A book which will make you smile. amongst that lone teardrop.
