Awesome music compositions and lyrics, script of this film and its dialogues are good, all casts performances are tremendous, cinematography is also good. Overall Best movie.

No need of such negative plot at all
Aug 28, 2016 12:04 AM6058 Views (via Mobile)

This movie natrang is made to show about the art. but it doesn't need to be shown as if there is nothing more important than it. the main lead in the film loses everything in his life for the art. his family, his body everything. there is no need of such fake or negative scenes at all. they could have shown the value of art in other ways too. The movie will be connected to many but the plot itself is fake and unreal. I don't agree with it. disappointed a lot.

Apsara Aali... and spread the magic!
Feb 09, 2012 11:27 PM18626 Views

Anybody remember DD2 channel - METRO, and if so, anybody remember Fri/Sat late night English movies, and sunday's regional movie broadcast. I have seen many English movies during those time, when we don't have cables in our house, but never seen regional movies. First regional movie I remember I watched in latest times in "Mungaru Male" (Kannada) and just yesterday I watched another, this time it's "Natarang" (Marathi). Marathi is quite similar to Hindi, plus the version I saw had English subtitles, so I understand it quite fully. I liked both the movies, but let us now discuss about this 2010 movie, I loved this movie, and I must say that its a must watch for any movie-lover.

Natarang is a story of a passionate art-lover (aka natarang aka theater artist) named Guna Kagalkar (Atul Kulkarni), who is a poor labourer and has a wife Daarki (Vibhawari Deshpande), a son and an old father to take care of. But whatever meager income he got, he wasted it on watching theater aka nautanki. He didn't take care of his family, but one day he lost his job due to an engine installed on the farm, he alongwith his friends think to start their own theatre company, but they lack a female lead, only she can draw the crowds, so Guna's friend and mentor Pandba (Kishor Kadam) started searching for one, and one day they find the female lead - Naina (Sonali Kulkarni), daughter of Yamunabai (Priya Berde), Pandba's ex-love interest. But Naina put a condition before joining - she want a panzy character, an eunuch to dance with her in the nautanki. Guna and Pandba started searching but didn't find anybody to act as eunuch in their drama shows. Just because of his unconditional love for art, Guna himself decided to act the role of eunuch, although he is aware of its consequences. Their drama company "Naina Kolhapurakin-Guna Kagalkar Theater Company" become famous because of their shows, all are written by Guna himself, but it deteriorates Guna's image in front of his family, and people of villages, they started thinking him as a real eunuch. During one big show duration, because of two rival politician's power war, his drama company got attacked and burnt, and because of Guna's saying no to one politician, he alongwith his gang, raped him. But he continued doing drama, and in the ending scene, he was shown getting a lifetime achievement award.

The biggest positive of this movie is story, the plot. The movie is based on a Marathi novel of the same name written by Anand Yadav, and screenplay is written by Ravi Jadhav. What a plot, and I just stumbled here because of Dance India Dance. I saw a wonderful dance performance by a participant on a song, "Apsara Aali", then I downloaded that song, since I liked it, hence come to know about this movie, and out of curiosity I checked the story on wikipedia, and found it so different that yesterday I downloaded the movie. Alongwith the story, songs too are great, nice marathi format folk music, well supported by dholaks and dholkis in background score, Ajay-Atul (My Friend Pinto, Singham and Agneepath fame) did wonderful job here, while songs are written by Guru Thakur. The most favourite of mine is "apsara aali" which is sung by Bela Shende, and fit perfectly for a nautanki song. Other best I can say is "Wajle Ki Bara" sung by Bela Shende. Next best asset of the movie is Atul Kulkarni, the whole movie goes round him, and he is such a gem of actor, that he really deserves applause for this great performance, where in the beginning he acted masculine as a poor but enjoying labourer, who have body-shody too, but later shifted to a feminine acting by performing a role of eunuch. He single-handedly took the movie to great heights. Other actors also worth checking are Vibhawari in the role of wife of a neglected husband, Kishor as mentor of Guna who want to do everything right but he also want to grow, and in that sense make some decisions wrong. Sonali looks pretty and cute actor. These two lines of the song fits her perfectly "Natali Thatali, sashe umatli, chandni rang nahali, youvan bijli, pahun na thisali, indrasabha bhavtali, apsara aali indrapuri tun khali", (Meaning - she is dressed up and bathed in moonlight came on stage, like a thunderbolt which has struck the entire court of Indra, here comes the nymph straight from the heavens) One more think I liked here is the smooth transition of the movie from a light, somewhat comedy treatment to a more serious one, where in the first part everybody seems enjoying, having scenes of interviewing many person for the character of female lead and eunuch seems entertaining, while it become serious in 2nd half after Atul's character was attacked by comments for him playing the role of eunuch, but you didn't felt difference because of the smooth transition. Some negatives are there too. During last hour, the writer tries to give movie a political touch, yes that may be the part of story, but it becomes loud, and very loud, which can be handled in a better way. Then sometimes, in some scenes I felt acting of Kishor a letdown, it seems like he is pretending to be serious while in actual he was acting really seriously, also the character of Naina was not developed properly. In between of the movie, she said a dialogue, that she cannot become a wife of a eunuch, when Guna proposes her, but later on, she was the one who stands up with him to fight with world. She seems double-faced.

The movie goes on for 2 hrs, and is wonderfully directed by Ravi Jadhav, it was released on 1st Jan, 2010, and is a must watch for cinema lovers. If you like watching good cinema, you can watch it on youtube, it has english subtitles. My take 4/5. Soon will be writing review on 'Mungaru Male' and as of now started downloading one more Marathi movie 'Harishchandrachi Factory'.

Watched Natrang last night and was completely in awe of it.Liked the songs and the story as well. Superb performance by Atul Kulkarni and awesome music by Ajay-Atul.

Loved the two famous songs-Apsara Aali n Wajale ki Baara sung by Bela Shende. The movie tells us the story of those people who play a pansy character in dramas and how in real life people assume them as eunuch.

One such character is Guna. His love and devotion for Tamasha. It also tells us how political parties make use of an art form for their own benefit.

Do watch this movie.

One of the best marathi movie in recent times
May 28, 2010 09:55 PM7417 Views

Stunning and soul stirring experience!

One of the best movies I have seen in recent times. The storyline is unique, bold and offers quite an experience. The casting is done carefully and everyone has given his or her best. Creative cinematography. Last but not least, fresh, original, throbbing and sensual music by Ajay Atul. Overall, a chemistry that keeps you engaged until the last frame. I was stunned and really liked the movie in its entirety. A job well done by Ravi Jadhav, a debuting director.

I would really recommend this movie to everyone. Even if you do not understand Marathi, watch it with subtitles.

Marathi Cinema Redefined
Mar 09, 2010 12:19 PM12135 Views

Till some years ago, Marathi cinema typically consisted of slapstick comedies with known faces churning out films which identified mostly with the dress circle crowds. Shwaas, however changed things for the better. Not only have people started going to the theaters to watch a Marathi film, but the quality of filmaking has radically improved. Marathi cinema is undergoing an overhaul of sorts. Leading this revival is Natrang.

The Plot:

Natrang, based on a book of the same name, is the story of Guna, a farmer having an acute liking for performing arts. Set in rural Maharashtra some decades ago, the film follows Guna and his friends as they get an opportunity to start their own Tamasha company. Tamasha companies typically consisted of the lead female dancer, fellow dancers, the musicians, and the "Nachya", a character resembling a female played by a male. Having done everything right, Guna doesnt manage to find a Nachya for his company. The film portrays how Guna the "Shaahir" (playwright) takes up the job of Nachya to fill the void.

The Cast:

Atul Kulkarni: This should be one of the best performances of his career. The transformation from the thickly built Guna the farmer to the wafer thin, lady like, Guna the Nachya is astounding. He has become Marathi cinema's very own Ghajini. This role may well earn him a national award if not anything less.

Sonali: Not only is she gorgeous, her performance is simply put, scintillating. A brilliant dancer and great actor. She is a big find for the industry.

The supporting cast mainly Kishore Kadam as Pandoba, Priya Berde as Yamunabai, Vibhawari Deshpande as Dwarka give a fitting response to the main leads.

The Music:

This is a standout album by the superhit duo Ajay-Atul. They have captured the rhythm of Lavani music brilliantly. This album redefines Lavani music and will definitely help get the crowds back to this dying art form. Khel Mandala is one of the best songs of the year. Also making it to the top of the charts is the foot tapping number, Vajle Ki Bara.

The Critic In Me:

Although Natrang tries to be perfect in many ways, it really doesnt fulfill the demands of a better script. The ending seems to have been wrapped up in a hurry. That Guna is also a father of a son is not explored much by the director. Some loose ends could have done with a bit of trimming.

Final Verdict:

Natrang is a really important film. It portrays an artist's struggle with the society he lives in. The ignorant society which refuses to accept Guna as a Nachya. The unfortunate events that lead to it. The way he overcomes everything for the love of his art. The film has been instrumental in re-popularising Lavani music. It is interesting to note the fact that this is a debut for director Ravi Jadhav.

Natrang is a definite watch. Atul Kulkarni fans have no reason to miss it. Most importantly, if you crave for Lavani music Natrang is the show you should be getting your tickets to.

'Masterpiece'
Feb 23, 2010 12:22 PM12989 Views

Natrang is a beautiful ‘masterpiece’ drawn by an artist (Debut Director) Ravindra Jadhav (alumini of J.J.school of arts) on a celluloid screen. ‘Geet wohi tum gao, jisse is ‘mitti’ki khusboo aaye’, do you remember this song from Pardes? Yes. Truly ‘Natrang’ is a song by ‘Marathmoli maati’ (Maharashtra’s soil). It reminds us that the glorious days of ‘Marathi cinema’ are back.

Natrang is ‘Lavani’ ( a folk dance form), a journey (an artist’s lifestory), a passion (passion about work and culture) , entrepreneurship ( Gunawant Kagalkar and Naina tamasha company), and above all a social science ( society’s behavioral pattern, political factors, acceptability and resistance to ‘change’) and so many other factors.

At first glance, you remember ‘Ganpat patil’ who used to play ‘panzy character’ in Marathi Cinemas in 70’s- 80’s. But it’s actually based on Anand Yadav’s novel ‘Natrang’. Gunwantrao aka Gunya (Atul Kulkarni) is a daily wage earner who works on farms for a high caste landlord. He has a passion for ‘Lavani and tamasha’. He has inherent passion for acting and he has a great ‘leadership’ quality. Gunya decides to convert his hobby , passion into a business. He decides to start his own ‘Natak company’ when he loses his job(fetching water from well) due to ‘machine’ (water pump). People become pro-active when they see one farmer doing it, and decides to follow ‘Gunya’ just because they feel they should look for an ‘alternative’ work to earn their bread.

‘Gunya’ and other farmlabors starts ‘Natak company’ by the support of Pandba ( Kishore) who has good insight of ‘Tamasha business’. Pandba knows the dedication and passion of Gunya and he also trusts his capabilities as an actor and his leadership qualities. At the same time Pandba knows that Gunya is an innocent hearted person and does not understand business, so he decides to support him whole heartedly. Gunya goes against his family wish and starts a ‘Tamasha’ company in which he performs different jobs of writer, director, poet, and actor a King. Being a macho man and ‘marzi ka malak’ he suits the role of King. But situation demands something else from him.

Tamasha’ without ‘Girls’ can never be success and Naina (Sonali Kulkarni) who agrees to play a part in his troupe puts a condition that she will work with them only if they introduce a ‘panzy character’ (Nachya) in the play. Being an experienced woman in Tamasha Naina’s mother (Priya) convinces them that public needs innovation and ‘nachya’ is more preferred over ‘songadya’ (comedy character) by audiences. In small village, people do not get ready to play this character, as it could lead to lot of humiliation in public and may cause ‘public shame’ on their manhood. And there starts a series of sacrifices by Gunya. Padba convinces Gunya to performe ‘panzy character’. Naina guides him and Gunya becomes and excellent panzy performer. Within few shows their ‘Gunwantrao Kagalgaonkar and Naina; tamasha’ troupe becomes famous in neighborhoods. They starts getting lot of work from different villages and the success story of ‘Tamasha’ company continues with the more and more ‘sacrifices’ and personal problems of Gunya. Gunya has to adopt his ‘panzy character’ in his life too, to achieve ‘Supari’ (contract) to perform from political netas. I think rest of the part should not be disclosed here because there lies the ‘excellence’ of ‘cinema’, watch it to gain the emotional roller coaster of movie experience.

Atul Kulkarni has really done a superb job entire movie. This movie will definitely become a ‘stepping stone’ of his career. His performance is excellent which brings him in the row of ‘Aamir Khan’ and ‘ Nasiruddin Shah’ like legends. No doubt it’s difficult to play a ‘panzy character’ on silver screen too. But Atul Kulkarni has given a justice to it. The bodybuilder in first part and the fragile nachya in second half, the transformation has been portrayed by him outstandingly. Padba’s character played by Kishor is second best character in the movie. In facts in many scenes the level of this character goes much above the lead role. There are many shades to this character too and you sometimes love this Pandba and sometimes hates him. Excellent performance.

Third best performance is of Vibhavari who played a wife of Gunwantrao in the movie. Her struggle against poverty, her tolerance level, her disturbed mind, anger on society and finally on his husband (who doesn’t turn to her for longer time when she alone fights with society ) everything touches your heart. It sometimes brings tears in your eyes.

The music of the film is good. Few songs like ‘jau dya na ghari, apsara etc are very good. The ‘Dholaki’ played in entire movie and at the end of movie is mind blowing. You feel like dancing on the beats and speed of dholaki. One more feather on the hats of Ajay- Atul. Director has done excellent work in his debut itself. He has handled this sensitive subject very intelligently.

Finally, I am sure you have already read all the reviews on ‘Natrang’. But ‘Go and watch’ then only you will realize whether the movie is worth appreciating or not. Because I mean it again. This movie is for classes and not for masses J. You will not ‘love’ it, but I hope you will at least ‘like it’.

Natrang
Feb 10, 2010 11:58 AM9104 Views

Natrang deals with a very bold subject of nacha (male in female cotume) in a tamasha and the ups and downs in the life of the character. Atul Kulkarni plays the nacha with great efficiency, grace and histronics. He is ably supported by all the cast.  Music of the film though sounding familiar (tamasha being the subject of the movie) is refreshingly different especially for the sound.

The dances are brilliantly choreographed.  Also appealing is the colors used in the movie which is different from what I have seen in earlier Marathi movies. I would have liked the ending to be not so abrupt.

All in all, a very enjoyable experience.

Review
Feb 08, 2010 01:58 AM7133 Views

Though I am not a regular Marathi movie-goer, I found Natarang extremely heart wrenching and a beautiful movie to watch which tells us about the dark side of success. Debuting into film direction, ad maker Ravi Jadhav gives us the adaptation of Dr. Anand Yadav's classic novel which he directs with a lot of finesse and topnotch screenplay that keeps you glued to your seat till the end of the movie.

The plot revolves around a village wrestler, Guna (Atul Kulkarni) who does usual farm labour and stays with his wife (Vibhavari Deshpande), son and his elderly father, but has a deep passion for Marathi tamasha, though he never receives any moral support from his family who are always nagging and who always turn a blind eye towards his passion. Soon, Guna and other farm labours are unemployed which makes their personal and financial situation worse. It is then that they together decide to start their own tamasha troupe in order to earn a decent income which would offer them some financial freedom and allow them to explore their untapped talents. They approach an experienced tamasha performer (Kishore Kadam) who provides them enough guidance and knowledge about tamasha performances. Just when Guna is happy playing the role of a king in their act, the group decides that they need a beautiful dancer who will be the show-stopper and without with chances of their show being a hit is out of question. Though they finally find (Sonali Kulkarni), she puts forward her demand of having a Nachya in their show. Desperate and torned between many situations, Guna decides to be a Nachya himself. What follows next is something that you should watch for yourself on screen.

Inspite of having a rural backdrop in the movie, the story is very contemporary and focuses on various smaller issues that are rarely brought into limelight. In the earlier minutes of the movie, the story is quite humorous but gradually the plot takes us for a ride into the darker territories of what an artist has to go through to reach the pinnacle of success. The movie also gives us a glimpse of other issues like local politics, lack of appreciation, rural mentality and disrespect for effiminate tamasha characters who are cast out from the society and family and are often victims of physical assault. Atul Kulkarni's performance is breath-taking and from the very first scene he gets into the skin of the character he plays. The amount of dedication and hard work that he has given to this movie is clearly visible on the celluloid screen. Sonali Kulkarni looks good and dances really well while you are thumping your feet unawarely to the melodious folk music. Vibhavari Deshpande as a typical Maharastrian wife plays her part superbly of being disrupted between handling her family and what the villagers comment about her husband. Kishor Kadam also receives enough on-screen time along with Atul Kulkarni to display his variations of emotions.

Of course, if we are talking about Natarang we cannot leave out music from it which is actually the strong point of the movie. The initial song, "Mala Jaau Dya Na Ghari" which erupts while the titles are rolling is a nice fast pace tamasha-lavani song. Soon to follow "Khel Mandla" is a nice slow song that has some awesome drum effects and the song gradually creeps on to your lips. But, Ajay-Atul gives you the maximum with "Apsara Aali" which is undoubtedly the most popular song of the movie. Getting into the technical aspects of the movie, Natarang has a very good screenplay and cinematography which are equally important and have contributed a great deal to the success of this film. The sound mixing department also should receive a good amount of appreciation for excellent Dolby sound mixing of background score which works subconsciously on the minds of viewers.

Natarang is indeed filled with many colors which is a treat to watch. Indeed a grand way to start off in the year 2010.

Natrang - An Ode on Music and Art
Jan 31, 2010 10:34 PM8272 Views

There are movies made with an eye on awards, there are others which are created to ensure pure commercial success. Very few movies actually manage to rise above the average twee and trimmings to become a footnote in film history’s pages and Natrang is definitely one of them. Doffing its hat to the best known tradition of Mahashtrian folk-dance, i.e., Tamasha, the movie flows like a gentle ballad conveying its visceral feelings and striking an intense rhythm with its audiences.

Natrang follows the life of Guna(Atul Kulkarni) who dwells in a somnolent Maharashtrian town set in the early 70s. Its inhabitants too live in a state of oblivion with little ambitions or dreams of their own, barring of course Guna who wants to make a living in music and arts. While others blench at the thought of this alternative career, Guna struggles with all his might to make his dream come true. He writes, enacts, and does all the legwork required to form a Tamasha troupe. Such is his passion that where others look for pecuniary gains, he visualizes drama, ghungroos, and dholki.

His efforts hit a patch of rocks each time and slews around violently but he knows that hurdles and obscurantist mindsets have to be ignored and endured. As he goes about adding people to the troupe, he realizes he is missing a vital member in the form a Natucni(female actress and dancer). His manager who is an experienced tamasha performer(Kishore Kadam) introduces him to Naina(Sonalee Kulkarni) who agrees to do the part. However, she puts forward the demand of a nachya(a female impostor) to be present on the stage with her.

Guna ends up donning the mantle of a nachya since no one else will touch this part by a bargepole. You then see the transformation of Guna from a well-built man to a feminine and graceful dancer. A bindi adorns his forehead, while a dab of pancake and kajal sits pretty on his facial features. The play is an instant hit and wins a bevy of awards and supari(amount paid in advance of a performance). However, Guna has to put up with the fuss and palaver about his feminine make-over. His family members distance themselves from him, while some of his troupe elements mistake him for a heterosexual. In reply to this, he stoically puts up an act of Mohini, a female form of Lord Krishna himself, whom he says has a bit of both male and female sides, just as his own.

The movie touches on all the taboos associated with Tamasha, and why it is looked upon despite being an oldest form of folk play. A scene where a silhouette of Naina forms on the screen as she explains to Guna why she cannot marry him shows the dark contours of this profession. The movie also espouses the frailties of human nature without fitting into an ideological straitjacket. For instance, the movie makes no bones about Guna’s sexual attraction for Naina though it partly justifies why he cannot love his wife. But the highest achievement of the movie is in its portrayal of its central character who struggles manfully to give a deft touch to his female role.

The music suits the mood and elements of the film, while the acting by all the characters is top notch. Atul Kulkarni had to gain/lose 15 kg within a few days for portraying the different stages of his character and this speaks volumes about his dedication to work. You get to see him grow in the movie as he struggles initially with his inchoate womanly expressions to magically cast himself in a feminine mould. His aching for acceptance from people is strongly conveyed by him and so is his refusal to believe in society’s norms.

Simply Superb
Jan 27, 2010 06:09 PM6347 Views

This is my first marathi movie review. Simply cause this movie is definitly a gud watch n overwhelmes me enough to praise it so. Most movies are shallow comedies or having repetitive and predictable plot or highly political.

This is one of the rarest master piece in the history of Marathi cinema. It really had a fresh new concept in all the movies made till date on Tamasha concept. Also in most of the marathi movies Tamasha is shown as a shallow form of entertainment. With the vamps and Nilu Phules in place, they appear to be somewhat similar to the mausi and Umrao Jaans of hindi cinema. But this one treats the subject differently and actually brings forth that Tamasha is finally a form of art and good amount of talent and hardwork goes in it.

Atul Kulkarni takes the movie to an altogether different level, he metamorphosizes finely from a macho personality to that of a gayish manner. The transition is not just evident in his acting, but also in his physique. He has actually gained n lost weight as well as muscles in a very short span to bring alive the character. He steals away the show n accolades. The movie's owes it's success to him.

The songs are well composed Lavanis and the coreography also appears to be different, as in the song'Apsara'. The songs are a rage amongst the marathi crowd.

Its a gud entertainer and reminds me of Pinjra by V. Shantaram.
