Arignar Anna Zoological Park Reviews

Chennai India
Good and fun place to spend with family
Mar 22, 2018 06:17 PM4474 Views (via Mobile)

I promised my kid that I will take her to her favourite place if she finishes the final exams well, and here we were after the result of A2, ? so, we were a bit discussion on 3places, amusement park, mahabalipuram or zoo.

My daughter was stiff on zoo, so we agreed to it. Checked few reviews and based on it, we packed some snacks in a steel box and few water bottles(btw, we saw few people carrying aquafina water bottles inside zoo, also they allow plastic water bottles generally used in all homes)

Left home by 11:30 am from SholingAnasultanllur and since it was a weekday, not much traffic, . We reached the zoo by 12pm, very few cars in parking and around 10-20 people in the entrance.

Ticket counter was leisure and we were 3(2adults, 1kid of 10yrs)

Zoo entry ticket 50 per head for adult, children 20, camera mobile 25= 145

For battery car 2*100=200+50

For lion, deer Safari 2*100=200+60

After checking in, we had to wait 15-30mins for lion Safari(they had a 12 seater van, which had to fill, so the wait time)

Safari started well and we just saw 4 lions, one was a old one just sleeping, the other alpha male(huge, young and with zing was also lazing near the cage window(the one thing thought it was not right was the lions were in enclosures instead of outside, pretty much like a cage enclosure) other 2 were lionesses also sound sleeping.

After some watching, we were led outside to the deer Safari, where we saw many Indian sambar deers with, without horns in a large area with water and feeding on greens. Both the Safari completes in 30-40 mins, after we were dropped @entrance, where we had to take the battery car for zoo tour(we waited for 15-30mins and boarded the vehicle of 13 seater.

We were taken around and shown the lion, tiger, bear, otter, chimpanzee, hippo, reptiles, enclosures(1hour)

There were 7royal Bengal Tigers and 1 white tiger, 3gharial crocs in a water enclosure, 3 otters 4 hippos, 1 elephant, 2 giraffe, few ostrich, many Indian Gaur's(bahubali bull) all this took an hour to complete, but if you are going by foot, it would take 2hrs. It ended well . Lastly we saw the Indian crane, pelican, American macaw and other foreign birds. By 4pm we were back to the entrance of the zoo and left to home bidding bye to the animal friends.

All in all it was satisfying of quality time spent and fun with family.

Arignar anna zoological famously called as vandalur zoo , it is the one of the largest zoo park in india, I visited it in this june , the zoo is located outer of the city , the entrance ticket prize 30 rs for adults we also pay some amount I think 20rs for our smart mobile , if we have camers etc we have to pay extra amount, there is availability of battery cars and also rented biscyles, the zoo is pretty good with decent and pollution free enviroment, it contains only minimum number of animals but area is very large , there is a seperate tank( cheruvu) for water birds , the animals like lion , elephant , zirafee, bear etc we can see hear, I have seen all types of animals , birds and snakes but I missed king cobra snakes it is very dispointing to the zoo is contain some incovinence activities like unmarried couples are misbehaving it causes incovinence to families who are coming to sped there time , so officals should take some cautions on it, the accomdation avaliable there but it is some extra cost, finally my openion it nice place to spend our holiday.

Cynosure of this zoo is white lion. this Zoo have highest no. of white lion in India. You can also enjoy lion safari.

In the zoo, there are fish museum there you can watch different kind of colorfull fish.

In the zoo, there many types of crocodile. before this I had never seen so many types of crocodile at one place.

In the zoo, there are lot of deer, they are roaming in the zoo and make whole very attractive.

It is nice one day trip specially with kids.

There should be some more security check for the zoo, people are bringing food inside and making whole zoo very dirty.

Aringar anna zoological park is located on vandalur forest near to chennai. It is the first national park in india. The entry tickets for adults and children is very low when compared to other parks. At the entry the park officials will charge amount for the mobile phones. It is not so good. Because of this many students and middle average group people will be affected.

The transport facility inside the park is need to be improved. The location is hygienic and neat. The overall atmosphere is very pleasant.

First zoo in India, created in 1855. This was shifted from the then Madras City to Vandalur Reserve Forest .Vandalur Zoo is not another ordinary zoo in India. It is one of the biggest Zoological park in South East Asia.

It is loaded with almost all important animals like lion, tiger, monkeys, white tiger, hippopotamus, rhinoceros, crocodiles, giraffe, elephant, birds, reptiles, fish and some rare species too .Walking through the full zoo without rest takes 4-5 hours.

If you cannot walk and want to see all the animals, take cycle or battery operated car(1 hour ride with stops in animal cages).

Well-maintained Zoo.Cheap ticket price that is valid for the whole day.A real treat for kids.Neat roads.

Has drinking water in many places.Huts available where you can take rest. Stone benches available here and there. Waste bins available in many places. Not very crowded until its a long weekend and holidays. Vandalur Zoo Chennai is the best option to spend a whole day.

Mar 03, 2016 10:34 AM14107 Views

Arignar Anna Zoological Park, we call it as vandalur zoo. I have been here so many times. My school took me for one day trip to this zoo, during pongal I have came here with family and friends get together.

Its has covered largest area in vandalur. I have seen all animals here. We can walk along the road to see the animals. People who wish to finish off their trip soon can hire a vehicle.

Pros: Nice place with lots of trees and animals, we can say botany and zoology together.

Cons: As it covers a large area, easily we will get tired, Very hot too.

I have always gone there during summer season and I used to sweat alot but there are so many places to take rest. One day is enough to complete fully. Road map is avaiable everywhere. Animals and birds description will be available next to it for us to read.

Vandalur zoo - Chennai
Jul 27, 2015 10:54 AM20431 Views

Arignar Anna Zoological Park in Vandalur, Chennai is said to be the first zoo in India, it is one of the oldest zoo, started in 1885.In Chennai, almost all the schools have taken their kids to visit this wonderful zoo. It is so vast that it is spread around more than 600 acres.

This zoo was shifted to the present Vandalur forest reserve area and opened to public in 1985.There is a walking road which is around 6km, always if we go by vehicle we don't get a good experience in sightseeing. Most animals are provided with decent enclosures/natural environment.

I enjoyed the white tigers, hippos jumping into water. But I did not much like the enclosures for snakes and its poor lighting. It is a bit difficult for our kids as we are not allowed to carry food inside and no refreshment places inside the zoo.It took almost 6 hours for us to complete the visit and see all the animals.Tuesdays are holidays. If you have kids or elders with you, then you can opt for a battery car.even if there is a long queue for this, it is worth waiting. It can take you around in approximately 90 minutes. Lion Safari is also worth trying. I always make it a point to visit this wonderful zoo with my family once in a year.

Chennai India
Arignar Anna Zoological Park is managed as worst
Jul 31, 2013 02:16 PM10224 Views

This place is badly managed, and worst in the name of nature, only money collection center here, I pray for the prisoner lions there, god save their life or punished the people kept them there in hell.

Worst place I have ever seen.

I saw one lion kept in tiger cub, he was mentally disturbed, week and was looking old, his stomach skin was hanging up to 1 feet, because he was hungry for 1 week looks like.

Shame on zoo peoples, this is hell for animals.

Chennai India
Poor Maintenance
Jan 06, 2013 03:03 PM12396 Views

Lion Safari - The Lions are poorly fed.. unhealthy lions. I think the authorities steal the meat of Lions for their own bowl! Any Chennai dweller noticed this? Additionally, the behavior of the authorities (staff) is very rude. They seem to be not providing any information when asked.  Lack of cycles and vehicles during weekend / holiday times. They also need cycle for carrying 2 people.

Overall, Not a good zoo as compared to other well known zoos across India.

Update - "Good Outer design, worst Park"
Dec 20, 2012 08:46 PM12361 Views

Well, if u got Kids, camera and planned for a picnic in and around Chennai, This Zoo is the place to Visit.

I visited this zoo about few years ago and it was okey with few amount of animals. I could see Tigers, Chimpangee, Elephant, Deep, lots of Birds and so on.

Recently, the Zoo was re modified and designed into new. The news also said that a new attachment had been done in the zoo, named as "Butterfly park".

So to enjoy the modified zoo, I revisited the zoo just today on 2nd Oct and this was my bad experience. I will start with Cons -

1) Very Less animals found in the zoo. No Lion, No tiger, Elepants invisible, No Chimpanzee, no variety of birds and many more. 2) The zoo is very large and so the zoo might not suit for Old people who can't walk much and people with knee pain problems.  (See Tips)

3) The Zoo is not in a Systematic manner.  The Cages are allocated here and there and so there are chances that one might miss some animals.  (See Tips)

4) Well there are Toilet facilities available but r not clean.  Water Taps are found broken and during summer some taps are dried out too.

5) Food place inside the Zoo campus is at the worst. Unclean.  Even Jail mess is better I guess.

6) Virtually no quick helper available to help or Guide confused Visitors.  This is may becoz the zoo is a govt zoo.

7) Butterfly park is a crap. You can find one very little Butterfly in there. May be about less than 10 I guess. Waste of time

8) Previously the Car parking was there inside the Zoo permises, which was considered safe. Now, everyone have to park their cars outside the zoo on the highways only, which is dangerous.

9) Worst Ticketing for no animals -

A) Entry Fee - Rs.30, Every Camera(cell phone, Tab or any other) - Rs.25, Other camera Equipment(digicams and DSLRs) - 30, Video cams - Rs.250. This is absolute day light looting.

10) Photography as almost impossible in the there. All animals are caged and hence photo shooting with normal camera and cell cameras is impossible. Most of Simple cameras work on auto focus, which enables one to only take the mesh or cage and not the animals.

Now here are a few Pros -

1) the Zoo is very large and has a lots of places to relax. Most suitable of young couples and young college chaps.

2) The Location of the zoo is at pretty edge of the City but is pollution Free, which wont make u tire.

3) There r good amount of transport facilities like buses, cars and Trains to reach here thou.

4) Photography is Allowed(At high price) and so ur clicks can do magic memories here(if you spot something by Luck).

5) There are Drinking water and toilet facilities available in the Zoo.  That also includes Food and Snacks.

6) Seating Facilities available.

Tips -

1) There are Electric and battery operated vehicles inside, Old and knee problem people can utilize them.(High fee at entrance about Rs.300)

2) For Systematic zoo view, opt for inbound Electric vehicle or arrange for an paid guide.

3) DO NOT visit this zoo in Summer, u will get exhausted pretty soon. Advisable to visit during winter or in the evenings after 3pm(evening for quick visit).

4) Avoid the In-campus food court but u might buy snack items and water bottles from in there.

5) Get a detailed Zoo map before visiting here.  So, U wont get confused.

Verdict - This zoo was better before, but now the zoo is worst with almost many animals missing. Total Disappointment and hence won't recommend anyone to visit here.

Good Place to enjoy; Park maintenance is poor.
Dec 18, 2011 01:59 PM12137 Views

AAZP is good place for enjoy. But in the aspect of administration this zoo is clearly lacking. Few examples. Animal’s collection is poor.  Zoo doesn’t have - Iguana, monitor lizard, camel, rhino, meercat, cheetah, black swan etc. Lions in safari are looking very sick and lean.

Park management should have good vision in pulling more crowds by displaying variety of animals, birds, kids play station etc. If park authorities need my help, I will support.

A very pleasant picnic!
Apr 26, 2007 07:52 PM14016 Views

I visited today, India's biggest zoological park at Vandalur, Chennai. I was not so much enthusiastic about the picnic to start with. But I thoroughly enjoyed the day, and my impression about the place has undergone a sea change now.

Chennai's zoo was originally in the heart of the city, near Central station! In 1979, it was shifted to the current location, which is about 35 km down south.

We arrived at the zoo at 9.00 exactly, the time at which it opens (closed on Tuesdays). Parked the car at a spacious lot (Rs 15), and purchased entry tickets (Rs 15 for adults, Rs 10 for children 5-12). On entering, I got my first (and very pleasant) surprise of the day. We are not allowed to carry anything wrapped in plastic - snacks, biscuits, water (but PET bottles allowed). Usually when such a rule is present, we are rudely told to throw away our food and other stuff. But here, they provided every one with paper bags to transfer the food stuff. The attendant even helped us transfer all our stuff! Very impressed by this thoughtful courtesy.

When I asked for a zoo map/guide, they said it is out of stock. I was given a spare one by a second-time visitor. It has a neat map, photos of highlights, and suggested trails. The same information is also available at a huge notice board which you reach after walking about 10 minutes straight down.

Second surprise of the day - I had feared a day out in the hot sun (last week of April), but the place is very cool, full of a wide variety of trees. They can really name it 'Zoological and Botanical Park' - there is such variety. However, to walk about 6 km to cover all the enclosures is out of the question, especially when you have children. So we took the battery car.

A word of advice - they have just 2-3 cars, each carrying about 12-15 people, and with the holiday rush, you'd be able to get on one, only if you reach early in the day like we did. Otherwise, you'd need 6-7 hours to cover, what we did in just an hour or two.

While waiting for the car to arrive, we visited some wild monkeys and plenty of caged birds - peacocks, parakeets, pheasants etc.

The battery car ride is for one hour, and costs Rs 12 for adult, Rs 7 for a child. It stops at four designated places, each time for 5 minutes, and in other places, it moves very slowly. It is completely open on the sides, only there is a roof, so we don't miss anything. It covers almost the entire set of enclosures in the zoo, except the safaris. The safari rides are available for Lion safari, tiger safari, bison safari and bear safari. But we were unlucky in that, some road maintenance is going on currently and it is closed for a week. Next time....

We saw a couple of leopards, a caged lion, several deer, lots more birds in a 'walk-thru' aviary, many varieties of snakes, crocodiles, fish and so on. What is very nice is that, each animal is provided with a specific type of enclosure, according to its natural habitat.

The driver of the car is very helpful and friendly and courteous. I tip him, though he doesn't ask for any.

The whole place is so very neatly maintained also. No rubbish anywhere. Many drinking water stalls. But beware - no bottled water is sold inside. In fact, in the whole zoo, they only have a single restaurant and 3-4 Aavin ice-cream parlours, selling nothing but cone ice cream. But of course, we have been allowed to carry all our snacks and water, and also provided with several sitting yards to eat and relax.

All in all, a very pleasant, educative and inexpensive alternative to the maddening theme parks!

Couple of suggestions to the zoo authorities:

  1. They can allow bicycles inside. In fact, they can offer bicycles on rent.

  2. We need more stalls selling food stuff.

And to the visitors:

  1. Arrive early.

  2. Don't miss the battery car.

  3. You can take all of the food and drink you want inside - provided it is packed in PET / metal containers or paper bags.

Heat's a problem, that's all
May 21, 2006 01:12 PM13075 Views

Arignar Anna Zoological Park is located in Vandalur in the outskirts of Chennai. It has been carved out of a vast expanse of hills and forestland. So, is it worth a visit on your trip to Chennai? Let's find out. Well, first things first - travelling. From the heart of Chennai, you have many city transport buses plying either to Guduvancheri - the zoo is on the way to that suburb - or terminating at the zoo. But bear in mind that road travel will take a good deal of time, upwards of an hour at any rate. Since the zoo is vast, that will mean you have to start early. You can also board the suburban trains, alight at Tambaram and then board buses to the zoo or Guduvancheri, which would be faster. If you plan to hire a vehicle, there would be no problem anyway, though cars are not allowed inside the zoo - park them at the spacious parking lot outside. Second, carry loads of water and be prepared to walk around a lot in the zoo. There's no getting away from the heat even amidst all the greenery. The zoo opens at 9:00 A.M. So you can beat the heat to some extent by being one of the earliest visitors of the day. A convenient battery-operated train is available to take you around. But in that case, the driver decides which animal is worth seeing longer - generally the lions, tigers, panthers, jaguars, nocturnal section and aquarium - and getting the best possible angle for the shot may not be easy as you will be given limited time even to view those animals. So, it's your take ultimately - do you want an exhaustive and exhausting trip or a whirlwind, boring one? Now, the highlights of the zoo. I haven't seen such huge enclosures in any other zoo in the country. I haven't seen the zoos in Hyderabad and Delhi, but I have seen the one in Mysore, which is damn good. But the enclosures in this zoo really do give loads of space to their inmates. Especially the one housing the elephants - you can't tell how far away the other side of the enclosure is! The moats housing the lions and the tigers are also vast - a bit too vast infact. They are too far away to scare you. Again, unless you have a camera with a powerful range, you will not be able to get good shots of some of the beasts. Since the zoo houses a wide variety of animals in huge enclosures, you have to walk around a lot. I won't talk about the staple fare of zoos - this one has all the hot favourites, though they still don't have rhinos. But they have some exotic species that you won't find in many other zoos. For instance, they have a herd of rare sangai deer, which are found only in a swamp in Manipur. Jaguars are again not housed in most Indian zoos, though the zoologically disinclined can't tell a jaguar from a leopard. The Indian wild donkey (the English synonym is to be used in place of donkey, but the filter doesn't allow me to write that word!) is another rarity in zoos. OK, so what's so interesting about a bunch of donkeys, you may ask? But I'm sure animal enthusiasts will find this piece of information interesting. They have exotic varieties of monkeys - baboons, macaques and even the golden langur (though I don't know whether they still have those lovely primates). The pair of pigmy hippos is another feather in the zoo authorities' cap. They have a plethora of birds and reptiles too - waterbirds, peafowl, scavengers, predators, crocs and snakes, you name it, you got it. Even the nocturnal section and the aquarium are great. Particularly, the nocturnal section is superbly designed. It's blinding hot at 2:30 in the afternoon and here you are in the cool, dark nocturnal section, watching the animals of the night up and about in daytime. The zoo also has a lion safari, though I never had the opportunity to try it due to time constraints. But with 25 or so lions in the zoo's kitty, the lion safari should be interesting too. When I visited the zoo last, there were plans of starting a bison safari. I don't know if it has since become operational. Overall, this is a great place to while away your day and still take home things about the animal world you never knew. Just take due precautions to tackle the heat and you will surely enjoy Arignar Anna Zoological Park. The Guindy National Park is more convenient from the travelling point of the view, but that place is no longer worth a visit. If you go there, visit the lovely snake park and return with nary a second glance at the children's park, which is pathetic to say the least. When in Chennai, make out time to visit this place, especially if your idea of a zoo is the Byculla zoo back home! And do remember: no handycams allowed inside the zoo! Still camera - definitely on!

Enjoy you'r day

ARIGNAR ANNA ZOOLOGICAL PARK, a.k.a VANDALUR ZOO

This park was named after the then CM of Tamilnadu ARIGNAR ANNA.

This park is commonly known as Vandalur Zoo in this part of the world.

How to reach here?

Its 32 km from chennai city on the eastern side of the Grand Southern Trunk Road in Vandalur Reserved forest of Kanchipuram district.

Its 18km from the Chennai Airport and 1Km from the vandalur Railway station. You have good Veg restaurants around 1-2Km from this area.Ill give you a step by step info as much as I can from my previous trip to this place.

Inside the Zoo

When we entered this place we saw a parking lot, and they charged us around 10-20 rupees to park our vehicle.

We found a counter to purchase the entry tickets. It costed around 15 rupees for adults. Shocking information here was people had to pay 150 if they had a video camera with them at this counter. A normal still camera attracted Rs.25 at the counter.

I was informed that there was a battery operated train which runs inside the park. Once we came out of the counter we walked a looooong distance to reach the end of the road. There was a sign board pointing to the direction of another counter where we purchased the tickets for the train.

Now the day I went to this park with my family, was a state holiday, so as expected it was crowded. The park usually opens at 9 a.m in the morning, I believe it closes around 5 pm in the evening.

The Lunch break is from 1-2 pm. Now since we reached the counter around 1.30 pm we had to wait for 30 minutes for the counter to be opened.

Since it was a State holiday there were advance bookings prior to 1.p.m for the next Road train(as it was called). I didnt know that, so when I asked for my tickets I was informed that it was only for booked persons. Luckily after much pestering I got tickets for everybody.

During the half hour break we checked around the the Moat type cages, which had some langoor monkeys, a chimpanzee and baboons . There was huge attraction next to these cages, it was the cage which housed the White Peacocks, the peacocks were so excited that they gave a unique sound which attracted all the passerby's. Luckily the time we were near, we saw their graceful dance with their beautiful white feathers.

The Rides

We also came to know that there was another ride called the Lion Safari, which can accomadate 12 persons per vehicle. With this ride one can watch the lions at close proximity.

Each ticket costs Rs.12 for both Road Train and Lion Safari.

I was also informed there is ride called The Elephant ride, which I dont have much information, and there was no other information pertaining to it in the ticket counter office.

The Road Train

Now exactly at 2.00 pm we had two Road Trains. (A three seater 4 row vehicle run on battery which can accomodate 12 persons).

Since there was a heavy rush those who came with their children were asked to keep them on their lap, much to the annoyment of their parents.

The much awaited Train ride starts with loud thump, everybody was frightened to hear that kinda sound, the drive comforted us by saying itz how the vehicle starts.

We saw huge varieties of deer's on both sides of the park, we enjoyed watching them. The train moved slowly so that we can look both sides.

Now suddenly the driver stopped the vehicle and pointed us a direction informing that anybody who liked to checkout the lion and tiger cage can move there. We rushed to the place to find some people staring at a bush beyond a wired fence. It took us couple of seconds to spot 2 lions resting beyond the fence. Since they were very far it wasn't that much interesting. We walked a little more and found a tiger, a huge one. It was a superb site watching it closer.

We went back to the train, the driver took us through some more species of deers and finally stoped in front of a bear hill. We found a big clawed bear very closely sitting like a human, with both of its legs in front. I missed my camera very much, as I had not taken it with me. Opposite to the bears cage there was a wild dog which attracted criticism with its foul smelling cage. Nobody dared to go near its cage.

We headed back the way and now we were taken near a big cage which had the JAGUAR, which looked like a cheetah and a tiger cross breed(LOL). The the driver took us to a bird cage, Once I saw that cage I could not stop myself from remembring Jurassic Park 3(Remember the bird cage scene!!).

At the left side of the road we found the reptile arena, which housed snakes & crocodiles.

The best thing was the Snake building which housed almost many varieties of snakes, ranging from the Green snake, the viper, common indian cobra,..to the pythons. (Dont expect Anaconda's here....). Best part was all of the snakes were in active mood. Everybody was moving around. We definitely enjoyed here.

Right opposite to this Snake building we came across couple of cement tanks which had 2-3 crocodiles in each of them. Since we saw a huge number of crocodiles prior to this trip at a placed called Crocodile bank, we gave it a miss. There's nobody around to guard these reptiles, as some kids were throwing stones and sand at these crocodiles. We saw a rare scene of 2 Siamese crocodiles in mating, but a kid threw some stones and separated the couple(Damn the kid!!!).

There was a broken amphibian glass tank which contained a decomposed frog, and a struggling turtle.

Way back to the exit we saw some Wild boars,Giraffes and always attractive Elephants.

There was a guy sitting next to me with his kid, and a woman before him, the woman looking at the wild boar mistook it for a rhinocerous and started to scream excitedly, but the guy next to me heard it mistakenly as a Dinosaur and told her that it went extinct 3000 years ago. The woman was stunned and kept repeating she saw it on TV the day before, but the guy kept repeating it was extinct. I could not control my laughter. The woman again was so excited went on to call the Giraffe a ZEBRA.

The entire Road Train Trip lasted 1.30 hours, it is good for kids and family people, not so comfortable but ok, It does not tire you out. Itz Cheap.

The Lion Safari ride is just half an hour, costs 12 rupees per person, and there's no guarantee that you would come across a lion in close proximity.

If you'r planning to visit this place, come early in the morning so that you can enjoy this ride comfortably, you can also tip the driver so that he stops wherever you feel itz important.

Remember 1-2 pm is lunch break. And try avoiding to visit this place on state or national holidays, if not come early so that you can enjoy better.

Remember Tuesday is a holiday.

Comments and Suggestions are all Welcome
