How do you write?
That's a stupid question, right? Most of us might not use pen and paper anymore. We are so used to typing in front of a screen. Does it really matter?
I can't write with pen and paper, strangely. And also I can write only in my mother's house and only in my room. Anywhere else I try to write, nothing comes out. How much of the surroundings matter when you write? And also, I love to write in the nights. I think I'm also better at writing when my mind is calm and at peace.
Also, I want to talk about the process of writing itself. I can only write when an idea has overwhelmed me. Initially I felt, writing chooses me rather than the other way round. Now, I feel a little differntly. I can force myself to write something but it's extremely difficult.
By an idea overwhelming me, I mean that, I have thought about it so much that there is no place in my brain for it. It has to come out somehow. If I haven't thought about it much or in many cases, I dont know how to develop that idea, those are the really difficult ones to write. I have given up on many ideas because of this problem.
All of us know the art of writing is more thinking than writing itself. I find that before I begin writing, I have to know the beginning and the end lines in my mind. Seldom have I chagned the begining of a peice. Everytime I write, the idea has fascinated me but I don't know the middle. Honestly, I cant think of the middle.
It's also true that once I start writing, 70 percent of the peice just starts to develop out of no where. It shocks me everytime. Most of the statements come automatically when I finish the first line. I know I am struggling with a peice when this doesn't happen.
To me, that 70 percent of stuff that automatically appears on screen while writing something is something magical. When I come up with one liners or when my characters develop their own stories. That's the best part of writing. It gives me a high no other thing in the world can give. That's what I live for.
So which part of the writing process do you enjoy the most? What is it about writing that gets you high?
