Holiday or Holy Day ?

Yesterday in my office most of my friends were happy & of course they had several reasons for it, the first & foremost were India trashed Pakistan in the World T 20 by 8 wickets & the second reason was 2nd Oct Gandhi Jayanti, a general holiday.

I asked my colleagues, do we need a holiday on days like Gandhi Jayanti or Ambedkar jayanti?

Unfortunately most of my colleagues were silent & I understood their silence. They all just wanted to enjoy the holiday. Sometimes silence is the way to understand more about yourself & people. It’s very unfortunate that today the Father of our Nation, Mahatma Gandhi is remembered mostly on his birthday which is celebrated as a national holiday rather as a ritual. I am not able to understand why the people take a holiday when they do not have a reason to celebrate?

Personally I think it is not necessary to declare a Government holiday on Gandhi Jayanti, Ambedkar Jayanti or any freedom fighter or National Leader's Jayanti. It will be better to celebrate those special days by keeping a working day for all offices & educational institutions. In fact we should work at least few hours more on those particular days & dedicate the extra work to build our nation.

On the occasion of Gandhi Jayant or Ambedkar Jayanti etc, most of the power hunger & corrupt politicians offer flowers, lighting candles and garlanding Gandhiji or Ambedkar’s photo or statue but nobody follow their teachings. Before enjoying a holiday we should respect the great personalities & remember their contributions & sacrifices to the nation & society. It is important to adopt their way of life, teachings & qualities in our life.

Let’s follow the path shown by Mahatma Gandhi. The best we can do now is to try and carry on and live up to the principles which Gandhiji taught us. Happy Gandhi Jayanti !

After all, the best part of a holiday is perhaps not so much to be resting yourself, as to see all the other fellows busy working. (Kenneth Grahame)
